I’m building a water feature as part of my RR. It will only be a log holding pond for the mill at Potlatch. I figure it will be about 4-5 inches deep, and perhaps 2 x 6 feet in an irregular rectangle.

The only problem is that the pond will be on raised roadbed, much like Richard’s. I plan to use 2 X 6 framing with 24 inch centers.

Will that be enough to carry the weight of the water, or should I go bigger, say 2 X 8?

Water weighs about 7 lbs per gallon or .8 c.f. You have 6 c.f. or about 45 gallons x 7 = 315 pounds. Your framing should be more than sufficient. Use 3/4" plywood screwed and glued for the pond base.

Hot tubs are on decks, ain’t they?

Doh!

Yes, but also realize that deck collapse is one of the leading causes of non-motor vehicle death for middle to upper class college students.

People put things on decks that really should not be there.

So remember, no rich frat boys are allowed in the log pond.

However, take comfort in the fact that more people are killed in their own homes by their underwear, or by string, than die from deck collapse.

That puts a whole new outlook on things there TAC…and no comment on what I am wearing as I type this…

Outlaw bicycles as they are one of the leading causes of death among children. Buy you child a motor bike instead.

What size animals will be standing on and drinking out of this lake?

2x6 should be fine but change the spacing to 12" OC to prevent sagging of the ply deck, 24" OC is very wide spacing, 16" OC is industry standard, add a water element and the 12" spacing makes more sonse.

Coons and Moose. So 20# up to 1500#, but the moose will be standing on the ground.

Should suffice. You’re not holding near as much water as a hot tub.

Do NOT use fer yer hot tub!! or anyone else’s use either! Hah LOL Regal

No mooses in this neck of the woods, but there are 150 lb deer. Did you ever wonder why they named this place "Deer Park?" Thick as rats. I got my first deer of the season the other day. My auto insurance agent hates them as much as I do.

Didn’t take long for this thread to get jacked, did it? :stuck_out_tongue:

It is frequently said that all things American are larger than those in the UK. lol

Here’s something that isn’t.

Weight of 1 US Gallon of water = approx. 8.35 lb

Weight of 1 imperial gallon (eg UK measure) of water weighs 10 pounds by definition, at a specified temperature and pressure.

Steve,
An easy fix. If in doubt about the weight simply tie the number of joists carrying the extra weight with a 2x6 perpendicular beneath them and fasten a 4x4 leg under it (in the middle of the benchwork) to transfer the weight to the ground directly.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm…

A pint’s a pound, the world around.

That being true, and there being 8 pints in a US Gallon, where did the extra 0.35 pounds come from? :stuck_out_tongue:

Wanna Bet!
When we came up to get the modules a couple winters ago, there were 2 standing in the field up on the corner. Ask Tony, he was with me.
And there were three or four cars stopped snapping fotos of them.

Well, they weren’t on my property, and that is all that counts.

There is a farmer around here who ties moose antlers on to his mules. You sure…?
