Does this make you want to ship over?
You have to go out, you don’t have to come back.
Pretty wild.
I was once out in 15 foot swells on an 80 foot boat.
It was enough to convince me to never go out in open water on a boat smaller than 80 foot.

No one can say Coasties don’t have grit. Semper Paratus.

Thank you for the video and the queasy feeling in my stomach from watching it. I am truely dating myself here, having been retired from active service, 20 years this coming November. The 47’s are replacements for the 44’s and 54’s, of my era. All reports I’ve heard is that they are performing their task very well. My instructor at Alameda in 1975 at “Small Boat Coxswains School”, was the Coxswain in the training films for “Heavy Weather Coxswain Training” at the mouth of the Columbia River back in those early days. I suspect this video was shot in the same area. First name Ron, Chief Boatswain Mate, can’t pull his last name out of the grey matter. He stood 5 foot 6 inches and he was truely a big man. Like the 47’s, the 44’s were/are selfrighting and all the crew has to do is hold their breath and have the faith that things will get better within 25 seconds. All crew are strapped in and wearing full protective gear, including helmets. Always wanted to pick up the “heavy weather coxswain training”, but could never get it justified on the Mississippi River (first line of defense, which ever side falls off).
The Columbia Bar is indeed where they train.
Especially when the wind is howling ashore. With the force of the river dumping against the breakers it forms massive breakers.
It is called the graveyard of the Pacific.
Dayum!
I’m not even going to take a shower now.
Holy cow! I’m pretty sure I don’t even have a clue what sea sick means. I was on flat tops, and that was just fine with me.
Here is a great video of the boat, the Response Boat Medium, my father helped to order for the CG:

Dang… I like how in the last shot you can see the blue sky over the bow!
I was aboard Jimmy Carter’s old 76 foot Yard Patrol boat (built of wood) for a few years. Man, that thing sucked. It was the only boat I’ve been stationed on that was truly sinking ALL the time. The galley was the lowest point and I would have to call engine room every time the floor was below water. It happened every few hours. But the bad part was trying to sleep. I was always afraid I’d drown in my sleep when the damn thing sank. I only remember looking out the port hole one time when I could see water then the sky and water again and the sky and… We had a lot of sick people on board!
