Foamed PVC

Hey guys,
I know the name brand that everyone uses most of the time is Sintra foamed PVC board but is Komatex Foamed PVC the same stuff but just a different brand?

Comparing Sintra, Forex, Komatex, and Celtec PVC Boards: A Comprehensive Guide - Boardway Plastic Sheet PVC Foam Board Manufacturer.

I’m going to be by a TAP plastics in the Seattle area this weekend and want to make sure I get the right stuff. Tap sells KomaTex and KomaCel.

Oh and which thickness for buildings would you all recommend? 1/8? Or 1/4"

Craig, those are nice links.

I can’t laser PVC, so I’ve not investigated these much, but have seen these brand names listed together before as comparable.

In the first article, under 3. Comparative Analysis, it seems they’re pretty similar, with some breeds being slightly better in one factor or another.

From all that, if it were me, I’d go for whichever one I could get for the best price.

As to thickness, I’d ask for (free) scraps from TAP of all their thickness offerings in each foam PVC species they offer, and go from there with some experimentation. Or, buy a square foot of each, since they’ll be used eventually.

Just opinions, fwiw…

For what it’s worth.
I have used a couple of different brands and couldn’t tell much difference.

As for thickness, I use 1/4 inch and even that has to have stiffeners if the run length is over about 8-10 inches. If no stiffeners you will develop cupping/warping over time.

As for glue I use the clear PVC pipe cement, not the hot stuff, just regular, with a small brush instead of that big dobber.

That ability to truly and easily weld the material is a great advantage of PVC.

Thanks guys.

I think I’m going to pick up a 4x8 sheet or maybe 2. :joy: I’ll have them cut it into a 4x4 piece that I can slide into the back of the little car as I wasnt planning on driving the big suburban that day.

I’m thinking you want the KomaCel.

That’s what I was guessing as well. I’ll ask for sure when I pick some up.
