Flatcar from the WV&K Shops

So as not to Threadjack Bobs great thread, I’m spinning off on my own. Here is the basic 30 ft frame in the jig.

The freshly dejiggered frame…

The freshly dejiggered frame with bolsters intalled…

And finally the frame just sitting on the trucks…I’ll prolly go ahead and fit out the trucks and couplers next so I can get the height right before adding a bunch of detail…

Looking good Bart! Hope it worked as well for you as mine did for me. I will most likely use it for most of my rolling stock. It ain’t broke, it don’t need fixed.

Alright you two, your giving me too many ideas lol! Great work, I plan to build one of these jigs as well so I can build some cars.

Nope in this batch will be a pair of flats, a box and a reefer…I’m even considering a future stock car…

I have the drawings published in RMC many years ago, and had them blown up to 1:20. They are on the schedule, but down the road a piece. They will be a larger lot build, I am thinking a string of 8 or 10.

That ought to reduce some left over project lumber to sawdust real quick.

Like this one, I can see some interesting engineering to be done in fixtures. I don’t remember how close the stock car is in length to the flats. If it is close enough I will most likely use the current fixture, if not a new one will be in order.

Working on my grab fixture for now, will post pics on my thread later this evening or tomorrow. Have a step grandson’s birthday dinner to go to in a bit.

I have Carsens “Slim Gauge Cars” that have plans ofr sevberal, which I think they are thirty foot as well, close enough perhaps…I only used up a short section of shelving board for these four frames…just enough to complete my personal challenge, this will be my average car frame too…

Watching your thread here with interest, Bart…

MAde a bit of progress today…the fourth frame was in and out of the jig and its woody bits all installed…Also mounted trucks to all the frames ad looks like the coupler height is on the money

Then I broke out themini router…its a motor tool held in a special table that I got for Christmas years ago…pretty sure it came from Sears…

With this guy I was able to do shiplap joints in 1:20 scale…the lap in 3/32 of an inch square…

Hoping to get the woodworking done this weekend…and get onto the mastering and casting of the detail bits…

Great job on the shiplap. I will have to do mine either on the table saw or the full size router table. That is down the road a bit. More detail work to do first.

i wanna have that!!

how are these mashines called?

and where to get them?

Nice work Bart. I like the texture on the frame members. They’ll look great when finished

Welll I got t as a Christmas present years ago, and it came from Sears…I have not seen them recently (nor their wonderful minitools line) It clamps a Craftsman Roatary tool under the table as a power source and the height adjusts on the mounting…I just did a search of Craftsman/Sears and can’t find them, I’ll see if I got soome documentation squirreld away somewhere…

Check Micro Mart. They have all kinds of attachments for Rotary tools.

If you already have a Dremel, you might want to look at something like this: http://www.homedepot.com/buy/dremel-plunger-router-attachment-335-01.html#.URem62fld8E

Surprisingly, I did NOT find any such accessory on the Dremel site, just router bits.

Proxxon also makes a miniature router. http://www.proxxontools.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=23

I don’t have experience with either.

Here’s a website for making a mini table saw/router/shaper using a Dremel tool.

Looks promising

And it looks like Bob has a winner…its a little more updated than mine, but tats the basic deal

thanks all!

seems, i’ve got something new for this year’s wishlist…

Here’s one from Dremel that looks a lot like the one Bart has.

Aight…yes this is a flatcar build thread, but two of these frames are destined to become a boxcar and a reefer, so today was spent cutting subwalls for those conversions, still a bit of sanding and glueing to do, but this is what the basic frame looks like…
