Flat-wire...the solution!

A lot of us that build Ted Stinson’s GR mag plans have wondered where to get this flat-wire that he continually refers to. I think he’s using brass strip, which is sometimes not too flexible & is certainly expensive. I reckon I’ve found the cheapie answer!

Recognize it? It’s the metal strips out of your old windscreen (windshield) wipers! They bend pretty well…

…& God knows, they’re cheap!

Check the car dept in K-mart etc.

Phil, Some time ago there was a write up in the

by a top-notch German modeler (sadly he passed away in the interim) using brass tubing and flattening it. I’ve tried it and it makes very convincing flatstock with rounded edges. If memory serves he used to hammer it flat; I just squeeze the stuff in a vise with smooth steel jaws. Good for however many sizes of brass tubing you have on hand.

Hi,

if costs are the reason for using windshield wiper flat wire, I doubt that hammering or squeezing a brass tube is a cheaper alternative.

David Fletcher showed at MLS in the Carter Brother Coach Masterclass how to modell beautiful endrails from brass tube.
