Flagman

Just to add to operations, a bunch of us have always talked about having a flagman figure ride on the caboose and be dropped off while switching…and then the train has to go pick him up before it continues. I’ve been wanting to make this one for some time and finally decided that today was the day. So, he’s a bit crude, but I’m pretty pleased with the way he turned out. (Man, the camera is cruel. He looks better in real life, really he does! ) I still need to do some smoothing; and painting, of course. I’m also going to be making a flag to hang off that brass rod.

neato!!! nice job on the figure, keep em coming.

Neat! I have one of the Jersey George figures I’ve butcherd the arms of, into a flagman. I need to finish him up and put him on a stand that’ll fit between the rails.

Drill a small hole in the bottom of his foot, and glue in a ten penny nail. Then you can stick the nail into the ballast and he’ll stand up.

Drill a similar hole in the rear deck of the crummy, and he’ll stand up there, too!

I’m not sure I want to drill holes in my caboose. I’d thought about the nail or rod in his leg as that would help him stand up on the track, but it would also make it hard to get him in and off the platform. Plus, that means that each caboose has to be modified. I cleaned him up a bit this morning. Nothing monumental.

The flag is still drying after being glued in place; I’ll be making some folds later.

Bruce,
I use a little piece of 2 sided tape on each foot. If the feet are nice and flat and make good contact, he will stay. Nice job, like the flag.

I think he looks great.

Oh, you made me go and do it. Here’s my modified George figure, with his arm out for a flag. I still need to re-putty the seam on his arm.

cool. neat looking character…

Its the figure of George Thomas that Bart made several years ago on George’s passing. I still have a bunch, and need to make a mold to make some more.

Make one lighter!

First time I met George was in Atlantic City at the very first ECLSTS…what a charactor! He was a guy you just enjoyed being around. The figures does him justice…

OK. He’s done. I’m pleased.

NICE!

He looks so proud in his new uniform. His adventure is just starting. Great job!

Somehow I missed this thread until now. That flagman looks great, Bruce! What’s he made of?

Thanks, Ray. I started with brass rod for a “skeleton”, then baked successive layers of Sculpy on top. Brass rod was used for the flag pole, and the flag is something from a material store…can’t remember the name off hand.

Bruce,
You should be pleased, he came out great.

That Jackson & Burke must be a class 1 line to require
fancy suits for the flagman(insert smile here).
