Flag Coal 75 Visists the Railroad Museum of New England (LARGE p

Hank the Tank made his third annual visit to the Railroad Museum of New England in Thomaston, CT with trains running over two weekends ending today at 4 PM. I had a chance to go up yesterday and introduce a friend to Hank. He took tons of pictures and lots of hi-def video. I’ll share those once he puts them up. In the mean time here are my highlights from chasing two runs and riding one. As we arrived they were prepping Hank for the day’s activities, which included a partial blow-down…

Shortly thereafter, Naugatuck Railroad 2203 brought up the coaches from the museum’s storage yard…

While waiting for the train to leave, I got a close look at our own Al Pomeroy’s freshly restored wooden Central Vermont caboose. Unfortunately Al couldn’t be at the event, but he did get to ride his caboose behind Hank on rare mileage to Torrington, CT on a test run when Hank first arrived.

We set up our second shots to catch the return trip crossing the Naugatuck River…

We rode the noon train. Since Hank is a tank, there is a good view into the cab from the vestibule of the first car. The nice folks from the RMNE take small groups into the vestibule to watch the men work the engine. I got this great shot of the engineer as we were backing…

For the 2PM train we set up at a grade crossing for our final shots of the day…

We had a great time and I can’t wait to see my friend’s video. I hope these photos aren’t too large. The 800 pixel wide versions just looked too small to catch the detail. If they are, I’ll replace them with smaller ones.

Whew! Hank looks like he was working his butt off.
Nice pics.

I hope no one takes this the wrong way but…Sweet Caboose!

Thanks. Hank was working hard and sounded great doing it. They limit the run to a short section of the museum's operating track to minimize the grades, but he still works hard.

Well, that will probably prompt Rooster to post a photo of me in a compromising position; but I agree. The detail is wonderful. I hope to be able to see the interior some day. I love the steps and took lots of close ups so I can copy them.

Here is my buddy Al’s video. Watch in 1080p on Youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-LYSGElDmU

I’ve since learned that the engineer for the day was “Casey” Bill Sample.

I had a chance to speak with John Gamling, one of the owners of Flag Coal #75 and thanked him for making Hank available to venues like Spencer, NC and the RMNE, who without his efforts would never see steam on their rails.

Great Pics!!

Just found this video on the Gamling’s website Have Engine - Will Travel. Full 1080p HD on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEkIVvjN5fk

Tells the story of Flagg Coal 745 and a little bit about the Railroad Museum of New England

Cool!

Jon,

Nice pictures. yes i went down for the special event, but as i am recovering from being split open again (bypass surgery 5/15) i have limited my travel somewhat, especially since i could not pull the throttle this year. we can get together some time in the near future for a look inside. The museum was to offer tours but i guess no one was avalible when you were there.

Great pictures Jon. Especially the bridge shot. Don’t shrink em…

Good to hear from you Al. The guys told me you were a little under the weather but I didn’t want to post that. Speedy recovery to you. And yes, when you are back in the swing of things I’d love to come up for a tour and take the full length ride.

BTW - I found a 1997 promotional video of the RMNE. There is a guy at the throttle of one of the diesels that could be a younger you. Was it?

EDIT - Added old video…

Nice!

Good stuff Jon. Glad you had a good time.

Jon,

I was in AZ at the time that was shot. The interiors with John Gamm were in my car however.

Thanks Al - I thought that might have been the interior of your caboose.
