Fishin' (surf casting)

One of my favorite activities is surf casting. My grandpa taught me how when I was a wee one (I still have my first pole). Me and the misses were down on Hatteras Island (Outer Banks of NC) last week. I landed this puppy drum (redfish) on my little 6 foot pole baited with a nice big shrimp I netted in the morning. Sure was tasty :stuck_out_tongue: !

I’m not sure if it was last week or this week. As we were heading out on Saturday, there was a pirate festival going on up in Nags Head with lots of dressed up characters. Pirate lore has always been big down there since Blackbeard was a frequent visitor back in the day - http://www.outerbeaches.com/OuterBanksHistory_Blackbeard .

Surf fishing is the only fishing I do anymore. I once caught a Sheepshead in Galveston over 25 inches long. Ate it and found out a few days later it was very close to record size.
They have slot limits on Red Drum. You have to be careful. Too small or too big and they have to go back.
When I surf fish on the Outer Banks I use a 15 ft rod with a Penn 309 reel loaded with 50lb test. I use an 8 ounce weight with copper “legs” that dig in the sand.

Its was just at the upper limit of 27 inches ;) . Any bigger and I'd have to toss it back. They were out checking coolers later in the week. I usually only use my 9 and 11 foot poles but it was slow so I tossed in the 6 footer too. It usually only sees kayak action paddling around on the sound side but was lucky on that day.

Brian, that’s a nice fish!

Hit the beach late this afternoon with my son-in-law. Although the wind and sea were good, the weed was seriously thick. Son-in-law still managed a nice tailor (bluefish).

Beach fishing is all I do. Clambering over the rocks is too hard now. My standard evening pole is 12’, with 15lb line on an Alvey 650. Morining pole is 14’, with an older Alvey and lighter line. In summer, when the easterly is in, I baitcast (i.e., no sinker).

I can’t fish to save my life. I can hunt anything alive but just can’t fish. I gotta learn one of these days!

Fishing IS hunting. You just use different tools.

Ok, I can hunt any land creature without any trouble. But if it's in the water I'm lost! Really. I've been fishing since I was a kid and I'm sure you could count the number of fish I've caught on two hands. When I was at Parris Island many moons ago I would net fish for shrimp and was great at it but give me a pole, line and hooks and I'll starve!

Jon.

Did you dig for oysters on Lady’s Island?

Nope.
