Large Scale Central

First Run of 2015!

Today was a good day. After this really tough Winter here on ol Cape Cod the snow is finally gone and the temp hit 60 !!

I scrubbed the track down with my scotchbrite pole sander sprayed with goo gone and dipped into soapy water. It then ran my aristo track cleaner caboose and after each circuit that was washed down and the wheels of the diesel were also cleaned. on the back stretch up grade the S4 was slipping on the rails so it backed up and had to wait for the NW2 to come down for a rescue.

There will be much ballast to replace and several building roofs need attention. The next step is to get the main yard running. The electric switch machines will go back on and the turntable and engine house will be reinstalled.

Something that didn’t fare so well was my original tunnel from 2007. It was built out of plywood in the shape of a “J” and it had rcollapsed so that was torn out yesterday. I was surprised at how rotted it was. I’m not sure what will go in its place. I’m thinking of putting the track back down but trying to squeeze a 5’ diameter curve in instead of the 4’ diameter that caused the mountain route to be shut down in the first place. I’m also thinking about putting in a switchback setup to a logging camp instead but I don’t have too much room with only about 4’ by 16’.

Anyone else take advantage of the day to play trains?

It was raining here in north Florida today. No railroad operation. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-frown.gif)

I ran a set of light RS-3’s around the layout with no problems. Then I took out a 5 car Fn3 train and had a heck of a time getting through the 3 #6 switches at Indian Hill Junction. Cars kept wanting to split one of switches which kept causing derailments. I must have fooled around there for 1/2 an hour to get the train through. After that I was tired so put the train away.

I’ve decided that this group of switches will be lifted and brought into the shop for work. I also need a lot of ballast and track leveling this year, plus a bridge is in bad shape and will need replacing. I did little to no roadbed maintenance last year and it shows.

EDIT to add: The frustration of dealing with switch issues and derailments with track on teh ground has made me re-think my thoughts of extending the North end of the railroad on the ground.

Oh yea! After 2 weeks of lowering the railroad and regrading, today I ran the first train of the season.

I also got to run some trains Sunday (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)who needs to wash the truck…

I ran my battery equipped engine with my track-man 2000 for a while … then I pulled out the Hudson for a good run!(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

No pics … and no track problems this year .

We had major maple tree casualties thru out the yard though…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cry.gif) (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cry.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cry.gif)but non in the railroad… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

The new baby chickens are out next to the older ones … Ya spring is finally hear!(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Didn’t run anything, but the screwdriver and saw…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Lucky guys!!!

I’m still waiting for the snow and ice to melt! It is about 40%gone! Meanwhile I’m in the shop making a rake of 1:20coaches.

Fab day here yesterday. First run in the inner loop. Had a good time with two trains(well one a railtruck) going at the same time. Had the McKeen car at first, but it’s battery ran down.

Shot of the two.

I did manage to get in a run and make a video this morning before the rain came. Enjoy…

Ran 3 diff train sets for the Great Grand kid and the kids next door and two mormon missionaries and the guy down the street. Got two switches that need attention and a whole lot of re-ballasting to do. All together a good time.

Now for the bad news. It looks like I will have a bumper crop of Mulberries. The tree is over loaded. If someone knows how to stop them, I’d sure like to know. The spray to keep fruiting trees from fruiting dos’n’t work on mulberry cause the fruit comes on before the leaves are there to absorb the chem.

Joe, thanks for the ride!

Was in Missouri this weekend. Today it rained all day.

Good video Joe. It looks like you have many custom structures on your RR. Was this our first look at your layout?

@Tom-You are welcome. I hope you enjoyed it

@Todd- Thanks. You have seen a progression over the last 2 years. I scratch build what I can. I’m still working on the railroad. It’s never “done” as you know.

I managed to get all the track leveled and ballasted. I ran one train to test the power and connections. It ran great. Hopefully I can recheck the track today and maybe try a steamer out and see how level things really are.

I thought you had given up on track power.
