Car horns and snapshots greeted Coos Bay's first locomotive in five years.

The World newspaper reports the blue engine crossed the Coos Bay Rail Bridge on Friday and made its way through town to a railyard.

The line is not yet officially open to trains. Coos Bay Rail Link is using the locomotive to haul construction material and equipment into town to do repairs on the line.

Rail lines in Coos Bay have been empty since 2007, when the hedge fund-owned Central Oregon and Pacific Railroad abruptly ended service from Eugene to Coos Bay, giving the regional economy a shock.

The Oregon International Port of Coos Bay bought the line in 2009 and has since repaired all the tunnels the railroad had cited as problems
