Large Scale Central

First Loco Project

Well I am finally getting started in G Scale. My Father graced me with a 16 year old 4-6-2 Pacific and I am going to rebuild it. My plan is to get it looking like a train again and lay track next spring. http://users.eastlink.ca/~brownscountry

I would love to hear your ideas on improving this nice Locomotive.

First thing…get rid of that hideous yellow paint…

And welcome…

Welcome aboard! Congrats on your new acquisition and good luck with the layout!

I would fit in the newer version of the Aristo drivetrain. The “prime mover” gearbox is a vast improvement on the original drive (which was pretty weak from what I have heard. Good luck!

I’ll second what Brain said. I have a first generation Pacific and a second generation pacific and the difference is substantial

Looks like a very rare “Pacific Bumblebee”.

Good luck on your rebuilding project. You’re lucky to have a father and uncle already in the hobby. Your father’s layout, Ellis Station, is really well done.

Paul

Wow an new drive train? I never thought of that. Not sure how I would find one for that model…I will have to look into that.

I am experimenting with stripping the paint off without damaging the plastic. There seems to be around 4 layers on some spots.

And Paul I am very lucky indeed and I thank him so much for giving me a jump start in this hobby.

maybe a belpaire firebox conversion, scullen disc drivers, relocated headlight atop the smokebox, and a 250p75 tender?

Let the FUN Begin Well there is more parts than you can shake a stick at…But the best way to overhaul anything is to completely strip it down and fix every part as you go.

You can get a new pacific drive through either Aristo or a third party reseller–trainworld has them, also Wholesale trains. The aristo forum has some posts on how t install the new drive.

I agree with Mike (OMG, H*ll just froze over! ). Get one of the new drives. I’m told, but don’t know from experience, that they bolt right in, just like swapping out an Allison for a Merlin in a P-51.

I have looked for a new drive but unable to find one. Unless I buy a new train and swap. That would defeated the point of rebuilding this old 4-8-2… Besides is the drive train on this one that bad? I ran it on track and it ran well. It is jerky on hard turns but I kind of expected to see that on this long train. What am I missing?

Jason,

Too bad that my buddy, who is fixing one of those for his neighbour on a regular basis, is on holidays. He could fill you in on “the joys”!

Jason.
Try running the loco through a set of turnouts.
If it does jump around at the frog and try and derail itself, get the new drive.
If it doesn’t jump around someone has fixed the gauge problem on the centre drivers.

Here is a link to a new drive for sale:

In my experience the new drive pulls better and runs more smoothly. It’s not perfect, but it’s much better than the old one. But it’s some work to put it in and they arent exactly giving it away, so if you’re happy with what you have it’s all good

I have been gone to sea for a few weeks and now I am back at it. Made electrical drawings up and started painting some pieces black.

The motor is in very good condition and is powerful. I do not think I will change it out at this time.

Now that most of the parts got a black coat and I have repaired some of the critical parts, things look promising.

I have not yet decided on the final color. There seems to be 3 basic colors for this Locomotive Red Green or Blue. I thing green is nicest of the three but would like to do something different. Anyone out there have a 4-6-2 Pacific that would share there pictures to give me ideas? I am going to give my train a more realistic appearance with rust and scraps.

I painted mine B&O blue. In the late 40s early 50s, the B&O painted its “president class” Pacifics blue, to match the passenger cars. The Aristo Pacific is modeled on the B&O Presidents, and I like blue, so why not? There are pictures at my website, link below. I used Badger’s B&O blue paint, and a brush–I wish I’d had an airbrush, but it came out ok. http://chnm.gmu.edu/courses/magic/westover/ [img src = "

"/img> I left a white stripe on the footboard edge–not found in the original! The early President class were olive green This link has a list of colored steam engines and some pictures http://www.steamlocomotive.com/colored/index.shtml The colored engines are mostly pre-pacific

Mike,
I really like your choice of B&O Blue.
Makes the garden railroad much more interesting and colorful when all the locomotives are not black.
I bought the Bachmann Big Hauler B&O set for just this reason.
Ralph

The Aristo part number for the pacific drive block is 29363. It’s not a direct replacement, but you’ll have no trouble getting it mounted. I just found one for $80.
