First Dual Gauge Trackage on the SJR&P

After several years of discussions and design, the first section of dual gauge trackage has been installed on the SJR&P.

Most of this trackage in now encased in a tunnel but it is a start.

We have also uploaded new photos of our Phase 7 area. We hope to be operating in this area by fall of 2016.

Dual Gauge Trackage

Stan, that’s a lot of work… Will be a sight to see next summer…

Yanno, you can actually have it triple gauge… Standard, Narrow and Tiny… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)

Suck up

I did that in HO.

I am just hoping that I don’t have to add broad gauge to run the Clyde.

Are you having standard gauge operations too, on the SJR&P?..(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

My goodness that is a lot of stonework! Are you rebuilding the entire line or adding a new division? Is the standard gauge the new F gauge?

Yes the standard guage track is F scale to match the narrow gauge track.

We are adding a new section to the railroad which will extend the main line, connect the narrow gauge railroad to standard gauge and add additional switching. At the end of this new extension there will be an additional yard and locomotive facility.

For now, we will have only a single 45T standard gauge locomotive which will have couplers for both standard and narrow gauge operation.

For now there will be only one small dual gauge area and only a short section of F standard gauge track going into a tunnel. Not sure how far the dual gauge area will eventually extend.

Great looking layout setting Stan, I love all of the stone! That has to be a mixed blessing to work with. Lots of material but I’m sure a giant bolder is always in the proposed ROW too. Are you hand laying that dual gauge? I think tie strips are available here:

How about a picture of that 45T and and a 3 foot gauge Loco together? ( sorry to make more work for you! (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-innocent.gif))

I have a real fascination with this since I’m thinking more and more that if need be my railroad will skip the whole of the EBT main and just have Robertsdale and Mt Union which was a huge dual gauge yard. If I want to do any complex switching it took place in Mt Union. Hopefully I’ll have more room than that though.

Randy,

I’m pretty sure that is Cumberland’s dual gauge tie strips. And the 45T is, I suspect, the old Bachmann GE 44T dismal with lengthened axles.

The dual gauge track is handlaid. Several years back we standardized on Code 332 Stainless. I discussed with Dave over a period of time to to jointly fund tie strips for code 332 rail but in the end the market was just not there for this to be practical.

I have not converted my 44T locomotive yet. It is on the list of projects to complete but the list is large.

Next up is a pair of #6 dual gauge turnouts. Hopefully to be completed this winter.

Stan

Wow that looks great so far. Awesome rock work.

Hi Stan,

Thanks for posting this and keeping my dream alive.

I am also planning a ‘Phase 7’ with dual gauge leading out to the railroad. My dream is to have an F scale loop for Empire State Express #999.
