Large Scale Central

First attempt at switch building

The points aren’t WELL POINTY enough

Nice Pointy points Gary, David will be pleased.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Looks like you’re doing well, Gary. What are you using for track gauges?

I make my own gauges…round ones. Turn them on my lathe.

“I have never made a turnout before and hope that I haven’t taken on more than I can do…we’ll see.”

Really Gary.

We are supposed to believe you will have a problem with this little project(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Well most of the guys that build 7-1/2 inch gauge turnouts keep saying these are more difficult to build than you think. But this guy in Florida says his “kits” are pretty straight forward and he does all the bending and sizing of the various pieces of rail. I will make a template/fixture for the proper positioning of the ties and the correct location for the frog and the closure rails. I figure the jig will be about 8-10 feet long and about 2 feet wide.

Take your time and double check the gauge as you build. You should be fine.

Nice switch Gary. I placed mine on the layout for testing. It worked well for most stuff with the exception of smaller fanged wheels. They seem to ride up on the left point. The gauge is a little wide at that point and I think I need to make the points about an inch longer. I think they are a tad short and close just a tad beyond where left rail starts it curve. I also started making another frog with not the best luck. I need to find a better way to grind down the angle on each rail so the match up to the angle needed. The frog seems to be the most difficult especially at the angle the aristo wide is. When I try to match everything up the gap in the frog seems to large causing smaller wheels to dip down.

Yep, that’s why Aristo made the flange ways, so the flange would support the wheel through the gap. It’s a cheater method to over come scale tolerances.

Yes your points need a longer taper (that’s what Pointy David meant). When you sight down the line, the transition should be smooth, not with a bump. Flanges love to Pick the Point and ride up …

I had a feeling they were too short. Luckily they were fairly easy to make compared to the frog. I figure if I keep at it eventually Ill get it figured out. Trial and error lol…
