It runs!
Cleaned a load of junk out of the shed Saturday, installed a couple of shelves for the power supply and TE receiver, programmed the TE and went to bed. (Well, there were a couple of honey-dos in there too, wot took up a chunk of time).
This morning, jury-rigged a wiring connection to the track, put an LGB Porter on, and the thing moved (much to my surprise). On track that had been outdoors for a couple of years without traffic or cleaning.
So I took a Scotchbrite pad to the rails, and the Porter picked up the pace.
Then I tried my Bachmann Percy, which ran even better.
And my new Bachmann rail truck, smooth as silk.
And my old Lionel James, which desperately needs work on the pickups. It runs anti-clockwise round the oval, but not clockwise. Some pickup brushes are jammed in the tubes, and lose connection with the wheel backs when the wheels shift sideways on the bends. I just have to work up the nerve to take the lokey apart, and perhaps do a Schreyer on it. (Yes, Fred, but if I commit battery, I still have to get at those pickups. And right now, battery is out of the financial question.)
Grandkids were astounded to see trains moving. Wife liked the trains running through the “rock garden” that I laboured on for several weekends this spring. Good time had by all.
Gotta do the wiring up proper like, “improve” a couple of Aristo wide switches (the old plastic-frog-is-higher-than-the-metal-rail shtick, which offended the Porter in particular), and Bob’s yer uncle. Or at least your second cousin twice removed.
Oh, there’s a lot else to do, but ain’t it nice to get a train of more than thought on track?
Great to hear of your success, Chris…I hope we see you in a couple of week’s time…at “The Invasion”.
