Fiddling with the compression settings to upload to VIMEO

As mentioned after VIMEO upgraded to their new format and in the process eliminated the desktop uploading app they used to have, things got a bit frustrating i.e. whatever I previously used straight out of CyberLink without any compression wouldn’t upload.
Would you believe: then I read the manual   and in order to get speedier uploads I set the format to 1280x720.

The lesson learned: try a variety of different settings and see how the upload speed trades off against the quality. Not that it matters all that much when viewed on a computer monitor, but there could be a large difference when used on those big TV displays that are all the rage. No we don’t have one, yet, but we’re working on it - just as soon as the “whatever media” functions get a bit easier.

PS I may even give Scr…errr…YouTube another try, just to see if they still mangle while compressing.

OK first the 720p

And then the 1080p

Comments regarding the resolution quality appreciated.

Personally, I think it does matter on the computer screen, if you have the hardware to support 1080P, which I do. If you are running a small monitor with the PC’s on-board VGA graphics then you probably can’t see any difference. But with a 20" monitor and high performance video card connected via DVI or HDMI, HiDef video looks great.

I will audition your samples when I get home tonight and post my opinion.

Jon,

I agree, if you have the hardware. In my case a 22" display connected via DVI and fed from a ATI Radeon HD 5570.
The “problem” is somewhat academic when you consider what the run-off-the-mill 'puter has in hardware.

PS while you’re at it (thanks for the effort) please have a look at the version on YouTube

Perhaps my eyes are going or do you see some artifacting, too?

HJ,
To my eye, the 720p looks better on youTube.
The 1080 is appreciably better than both on a 23 inch monitor.
Even with the embedded player, I can read the Via lettering sooner with the 1080.

OK - Compared the two Vimeo versions on my home PC. The 1080P is definitely clearer, but the difference isn’t huge. I did notice things in the 1080P version I did not see in the 720P version. Things like the distortion of the background from the diesel exhaust heat and the crew member sticking a head out one of the doors as they passed.

I’ll try the Youtube version too.

I didn’t go back and re-play the Vimeo 720 after watching the Youtube version. I did notice a lot of pixelation in the Youtube version in the sky and hills that I don’t recall seeing on either Vimeo version. I did look for the exhaust distortion and I can see it on Youtube, but it’;s not as sharp a contrast to the background as it is in 1080… I really had to look for it.

BTW, my hardware is not quite as high-end as you and Ralph; NVIDIA GeForce card w/1Gb RAM feeding a Gateway 20" LCD via DVI. My choice of cards was limited because my computer only will fit a half-height card. I just dumpsetr dove a Dell mini tower with a Core I5 processor. I’m pretty sure I can fix it if I can borrow enough RAM to troubleshoot it. The guy dumping it stripped it of everything except the main board.
