Large Scale Central

Fencing the new layout space.

My original layout plan was not going to work. The hound dogs took over and I had to move. I set up a temporary test track with siding.

The new space I claimed will be better suited for operations. Rolling stock will be able to roll inside for storage. I’m still working on the fence , and making decent progress. The area is about 5,200 sq. ft. in a “L” shape. It’s not level but I can make it work. Still working on a track plan.

Lots of opportunity. This will be fun to watch.

This will be fun to build too. The layout will be raised so that will take care of most grade issues. I plan to stay at least 4’ from the fence and have plenty of walking around room. The east end will have a large gate for access to maintain the railroad. The view facing the fence is to the west (UP and BNSF mainline) and the view of the house is to the south.

I gotta go. That fence isn’t going to build itself.

That is a big area Jim. I think a blank slate like that is the hardest to figure out a track plan for. I had natural obstacle like trees and grades and my wife that limited me to one side of the yard.

Keep us posted.

Wife is on board as long as she gets her fire pit. I may not use all of the space, but it’s nice to have it if I need it.

I need to clarify that the UP, BNSF mainline is 1:1, so I get to watch trains every day.

Track plan is still a work in progress. I do know that I will be cutting a hole in the wall of the house so the trains can roll in for storage. This is a huge plus not having to handle rolling stock, and locos every time I operate. Previous owner converted garage to work space / storage.

A little more progress on the fence.

Looking forward to see how you progress.

Nice looking fence Jim. What and where did you get your fence posts. I like the idea of using steel posts and I have a little section of fence to install behind my railroad.

BTW, where is Elverta located in Calif.

Chuck

Thanks Chuck. The fence post are called “Postmaster”. They are made by Master Halco. I bought them from Berco Redwood Inc. in Roseville, CA.

What is the first thing to rot on a wood fence…the post. The Postmaster comes in 7’-6", 8’, 10’ and maybe longer. I went with the 8’.

Elverta is about 15 minutes (North) from down town Sacramento, CA

I’ve been following your progress too.

I was over there a few days ago to pick up some ballast that he has a head high pile of. It’s a real nice fence he is building and strong for all of the wind he has out there. Seem like it always around 30 mph and that’s on the low side of the winds. lol. If the winds blow his trains off the tracks the U.P will pick them up. laf.

Thanks for the info Jim. My wife’s brother and sister-in-law have a place in Placerville that we might be visiting later this year. Maybe we can make a stop and see your progress. Keep up the good work, we’ll be watching.

I’m going to have to like that big pile (free) of ballast. Can’t justify spending money on something else.
