Nasty!

RIP, train crew. I’m always terribly saddened by loss of life in any accident, but for some reason, even more so where trains are concerned.

In these days of computerisation and automatic track safety systems, STW rear-ender meets are thankfully a rare event, and we’ll have to wait and see what caused this one.

Tac…STW?

Single Track Working - multiple trains on one line kept apart by clever signals.

…more often than not…

Tac… how about a STW head-on collision? There was one about six years back halfway between Harrisburg & Hagerstown

In addition to that fatal wreck, there were two incidents of limb loss, bringing the rail injury tally to 4 dead and two major injuries (one lost both legs and an arm, the other lost an arm) in four accidents in the last two months.

Not aware of that one assuming the Lurgan Branch because of HBG and HGR, MD?

David: Ya it was on the Lurgan Branch, at CP-62. Southbound train was going into the siding behind another train, northbound failed to comply with the approach, and arrived at 62 to find that southbound just starting into the siding. Southbound engineer throttled up and managed to drag his train into the siding enough to miss the head-end of the northbound train. The NB train ripped the handrails off the tail of the lead engine and smashed head-on into the second engine.

Thankfully no one was hurt, but it just goes to show how easy can be for a simple mistake to turn very deadly.
