Exploring North Idaho

A few pics from this years travels with my UTV. We found old mine adits, lookout tower ruins, old homesteads and other interesting things. Not to mention the vistas from atop mountains. I can post some more pics if you are interested.

An old cemetery way back in the woods.

A typical grave marker from that cemetery.

Pend Oreille Lake.

Road to St Joe Baldy.

Mirror Lake below Latour Peak.

I AM!

Definitely!

Heck this s my backyard and I want to see more. I love where I live its one of the prettiest places in the world. I keep looking for something to rival its beauty but with few exceptions I find myself wasntng to come home.

John,

Where is that cemetery? Also I can give you a place where there is a locomotive in the woods near St Maries

Devon,

That cemetery is located on the east side of Pend Oreille Lake about 1/4 mile off of Johnson Creek Rd.

Discussing how we are going to get to the lookout ruins on Mnt Latour.

Because around the corner was this.

Made it to the ruins.

A view from the lookout.

Climbing St. Joe Baldy.

View from Baldy.

Old mine adit. All the entryways have been filled. Lots of rusty junk laying around this one.

Another mine adit. Boarded up.

This mine adit was very unusual. It was like a bank vault with huge iron doors.

A look at the typical trails we ride.

Crossing creeks.

Running into critters.

Old Homesteads.

Shaded ancient cedar groves.

And other interesting things.

Cedar grove.

Bear.

Some more of the homestead.

The distant summit of St Joe Baldy. We made it to the lookout on the top.

How in the heck did this thing get way out here?

Bear grass in bloom.

Mountain lake full of brook trout.

Typical trail.

Lake Pend Oreille.

Nice !

I’m guessing that the pond full of brookies has enough flow and sustains cooler temps year round ?

David,

Our mountain lakes usually have great year around flow and are ice cold. Heck they don’t thaw out until late June or even July and then freeze up again in late November. But for some reason our Brook Trout do not grow well here. Very rarely see them much over 6-8 inches.

Devon, the lake we fished when we were out there had been overstocked with trout. Yea, the were small, but plentiful.

Rooster, Devon is right. When we passed through in late June/early July I took Polaroid pictures of the snow drifts that were still on the north sides of some hills.

That snow in the picture above was the week after Memorial day this year. Quite unexpected. As I was the last one thru out of 3 RZR’s, I high centered and got stuck. My brother had to winch me out.

Great Pix!

Reminds me of my drive from Medford OR, out to Port Orford to see Richard Smith last summer. Followed the GPS through Siskiyou Nat. Forest, road kept getting narrower and narrower, higher and higher, temps kept getting lower and lower, no cell phone service. It was a beautiful drive, but I took another way back to Medford. It was a bit too remote up there. Come to find out later from my son, it was the same place where a family got stuck during the winter and never made it out of there.

Nice trip John. Looks like great country.

Thanks for sharing, fantastic pictures. Maybe winning the lottery I will get there…

Thanks JB - I really enjoyed that. I got a very small taste of this fun with my youngest last summer on an off-road Jeep trip into the Rockies. Your trails look even more remote and higher than where we went.
