Exploding LED?

While running the train today, I noticed that the lens had come off the rear light on top of the tender. This is on my BBT Bachmann “Annie”. Closer examination revealed that the LED inside the light was split almost in half lengthwise. Both the lens and the missing piece of the LED were lying on top of the tender.

What could have caused this? Is it possible that the LED “popped” somehow??

How do I replace the LED? What type do I need?

Sounds like it got a little too much voltage. Did this just happen? Was it the first time you ran it in reverse?
Were any mods made when the new drive was put in?
You can replace with an amber LED from RadioShack. It does need the appropriate resistor ( http://metku.net/index.html?sect=view&n=1&path=mods/ledcalc/index_eng#single ) and to be wired in the proper direction.

There are no mods made to the lighting in the tender, by my hand.

I do know that the LEDs do burst occasionally. One nice advantage to the ANNIE is the reflector in the lamps. When RCS installed the battery and RCS package in my ANNIE, Dave replaced the LED with a GOW bulb. The times I run at night proved this swap most beneficial, the light down the tracks was outstanding, I couldn’t have been more pleased.

Ditto what he said about GOW’s … fought it tooth and nail till I got my K-27 back and could use the tender as a flashlight if I wanted to …

Nope, this wasn’t the first time it’s been run in reverse. However, it did have a couple derailments yesterday – could it have been caused by the loco shorting on the track? Unfortunately I was keeping an eye on the grandkids most of the time so I’m not sure of the exact time that the LED popped.

Can someone tell me the specs for the LED? I’d like to replace it with a “warm white” LED like I used in the Buddy L loco.
