Expanded metal, where do I get it for a model?

I was able to get up on top of the rotary snow plow in Cheyenne over thanksgiving. It had been moved to the steam shop, ready to go out on a run. The top is all expanded metal with some short stanchions around it. Anyone have any idea where to get something to model it with? What scale stuff to use? It was sorta diamond shape with grooves so you would get a good grip.

Jerry,

Check out this link to gain a better understanding of the expanded metal product, http://www.mcnichols.com/products/expanded/.

Plastruct lists some ‘expanded metal’ product in ‘G’ scale in their current catalog.

There was also a thread either on LSC or MLS on building some rock cars that had extended end platforms made from expanded metal and I seem to remember a reference to a place to get photo etched brass expanded metal.

Good luck!

Bob C… Tks for the infor. on McNichols Cal… I been looking for stuff like that for a long time now…
and Jerry B. tks for making the post. Sure helped… noel

Expanded metal? Why would they have what amounts to an open top with only a screen over it?

K&S makes expanded metal in both copper an aluminum. I got the copper because it takes paint better than aluminum.

Jerry,

I believe I got mine at Michaels…but a Hobby Lobby may also have it. I remember Marty had picked up some for the roofwalks on one of his projects and thats when I went out and found mine.

I have 2 sizes from a company called Activa…they call theirs ‘wire mesh’

I also have 3 sizes from a company called Amaco…they call thiers ‘wire form’

I just typed those names and descriptions in a search and they are both available in various places online.

Good luck,
Hope this helps,
Brian

K&S at Caboose Hobbies.
I believe they call it “mesh”.

I’ll look at Hobby Lobby, going over to Kearney tomorrow.

Jerry,

How about some type of nylon screen wire?

Need a diamond shape Ric. I have some small copper stuff I think I’ll go ahead and use. Struck out at Hobby Lobby today.

Jerry,

As I posted over at that other site…

I remembered I got some of this stuff at Jo-Ann’s

Take care,
Brian

Thanks Brian, not sure what Jo-Ann’s is but none near here, I know. I’m in the middle of Nebraska, not much out here.

Jerry,

Jo-Ann’s Fabrics is a sewing and crafts store. According to thier website there is one in:

Grand Island, NE

Lincoln, NE

Omaha, NE

and Scottsbluff, NE

I don’t know if any of those are close to you.

Regards,
Brian

Thanks Brian, GI is 75 miles away. They had expanded metal stuff?

I was lust looking at the Hobby-Lobby website and they indicate they carry both of these. Exactly where in the store I don’t know. Good luck, Brian

I asked at Hobby Lobby, they didn’t have any, or were ignorant!
