Excursion trains I'd like to visit

Here’s some “nearby” historical tourist railroads that I’ve yet to ride. Seems like I’m often hearing about another one, so I thought I’d list a few for my own future reference. Feel free to do the same for your neck of the woods.

A new one, to be opened this year out of Gettysburg:

There’s others, I’m sure. So many; and I haven’t even listed the RR’s we’ve already ridden!

Yep, You will go visit them all and drive right by my house ignoring me.

Well, only if you don’t join in! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

¡¡oƃɐ sɥʇuoɯ oʍʇ s,pooʍʎןןoɥ oʇ (¡ʇou) „ʎɐʍ ǝɥʇ uo„ doʇs ʇsɹıɟ ʎɯ ǝɹǝʍ noʎ 'uoɯ,ɔ

That’s quite a list. A lot on there I wasn’t aware of. I’ve kicked myself a few times for not getting out to chase the Iron Horse Rambles on the Reading Northern. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting EBT many times since early 2000’s and a few years ago I drove right past the Everett, but had no time.

Have you done Western Maryland? I assume that’s fairly close for you. I rode for the second time two years ago with Ralph Berg but steam was down. We were supposed to go back the next day to chase as steam was going to run, but my damn car decided to crap out - you might remember that whole saga.

Yes, we’ve been on the WM, it was great!

Well Cliff;

During the mid-1970s I was an ashcat and a hogger on the W,K&S. Still have my fireman and engineer’s cards and my switch lock key. Also have bragging rights to having actually run real steam locomotives (although the biggest locomotive I ran only weighed 65 tons).

Actually, it’s an old one and it’s great to see it reopened. Did that line about 15yrs ago maybe more. Winds you through apple county. You get to see the back side of the Musselmans plant, vinegar vats,etc. Nothing spectacular but a neat historic ride. Very nice in the fall.
Let me know when you go and I will drive out to Mt. Holly just to moon the train!

It was September 2007 we went down to Gettysburg for a day trip. I saw they had the excursion train sitting there and we went to check it out. Went into the office and ended up purchasing tickets for next month. Gather round the campfire, get out the weenies and marshmallows and I’ll tell you a picture story.

Some back in the day pics from the trip in October. I’m sure things have changed and it’s probably up to today’s overwhelming safety standards however it’s a neat ride. Lots and lots of S bends snaking up the line to interchange with the CVRR.

Mount Holly ^^^^^^^^^^ where you interchange with my bare ahhh never mind. Next time I’ll leave a memo on the fridge white board.

@Cliff_Jennings, this year is the Bicentenary of the first passenger-carrying railway, the Stockton and Darlington. There are events all over the UK, culminating in the trip along the original route [what there is of it left] using a replica 1825 steam loco and 2 cars. (All the replicas are built to mainline standards so they can use Network Rail tracks.)

My sister lives in Darlington, I lived very close to Stockton as a teenager, and my wife’s ex-college-roommate lives near Skipton, about 1 hr away. My sister-in-law lives in the Midlands near the Border Counties (Welsh border.) So I figured, why not do a trip to visit the railways that I’ve never seen and visit friends and family - very bucket-list.

So the trip involves stopping to see sister-in-law, who is close the Bridgenorth on the Severn Valley RR (seen that a couple of times.) The we head off to the Welsh coast to visit the Talyllyn narrow gauge, the first restored railway in the world. We stay in Porthmadog for the night, right next to the Cob and the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland RR, then I get a Boston Lodge works tour the following morning.

Then we drive over to wife’s college roommate, which will be our base for a few days. I go see trains, she stays home and another of the roommates from college visits.

One trip which is pure nostalgia is to the Wensleydale RR, which runs up in the Yorkshire Dales. (“All Creatures Great & Small” territory.) When I was at high school, my pal’s dad, who worked for the railways, bought the old station buildings, with the station master’s house, at Constable Burton, which is on the same line. We spent many weekends there, milking cows, shooting rabbits, etc., etc.

Another more serious day trip is to Locomotion in Shildon, an offshoot of the National Railway Museum, where they have a lot of locos stored indoors and open to the public.

The same day, I’m hoping to visit Hopetown, Darlington. It used to be North Road Station, which they filled with a few locos when the trains stopped running. Now it still has the main hall but also the restoration shop for the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group and the Darlington Locomotive Works, where they are building a brand-new 2-8-2 “P2” class locomotive.

And then we scoot to Leeds RR Station, drop the car, take a 125mph train to London and stay at the Great Western Hotel, built on Paddington Station, before we fly home.

Phew, makes me tired just thinking about it!

Now that’s what I call planning! Hope you have a great trip Pete.

Cheers

What an epic railroad trip! Thanks for the inspiration, Pete, it sounds simply amazing.

Over the years, my wife and I have enjoyed All Creatures Great and Small (though I generally abbreviate it to “All Critters” to save syllables), and would especially love that portion.

Maybe some year I might attempt a miniature version of your trip, except touring PA’s beautiful railroads. True, PA lacks a border with people having an exotic and hard-to-understand dialect, like the Welsh. However, it does border on West Virginia, and that’s probably close enough.

You forgot the Amish you English :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Yes but when ya gotta use 20 characters… :sunglasses: :smiley:

We did a somewhat similar trip in 1985. I was able to visit a few railroad sites I don’t remember all of it off the top of my head but the S and D was one of the stations we visited, it was a station building with a, I assume, replica of the engine inside.
We visited several other sites but the best was the rail museum at York, fantastic.

Cliff;

I don’t forget the Amish, since I am also descended from Pietistic German stock on both my mother’s side (EUB) and father’s side (Church of the Brethren). Neither were plain folks, but were Pietistic German denominations nevertheless.

I suspect that was North Road, Darlington, and that was a 1975 replica inside.
When I was teenager the original “Locomotion” and “Derwent” were plinthed at Darlington Bank Top station (the major station.) I saw them every time I arrived in a DMU. Here’s Locomotion and a DMU, Derwent off to the left.
