Large Scale Central

Ever seen a train that

… lays its own track?

Have a look, mighty impressive!

Somewhere in Belgium!

Yes, stood about 15 feet away from one in Palm Springs as it did about 1/4 mile in one day.

Very impressive… this one was renewing, so swapping out ties and rail and putting new down.

Well, it’s not as fast as the Wallace & Gromit method but it’ll do.

Seriously, I can’t imagine how such a complex machine gets designed.

In sections, when you stand in front of it, you see the carrier system for the ties, the tie replacement system, the guides for the rails, etc… It’s really a number of machines in an “assembly line”…

I’ll see if I can find my pictures…

I watched the same system laying new track and concrete ties for the San Diego Metro Transit System 5-6 years ago. I was awed.

Haven’t seen it in action.
But saw the whole train parked on a siding.
What a bunch of machinery…

It wasn’t pulled or pushed by a BN loco, but had 2 of their own locos.
One on each end.
They looked liked Canadian built Alcos.
