I just completed my first ESU large scale decoder installation into a customer’s LGB 21252 South Park Forney Steamer. I’m so impressed with the quality of the chuff and other sounds, and the multitude of adjustable decoder and sound features, that I’m now stocking these ESU LokSound 5 XL decoders for other DCC conversions. I primarily used Massoth XLS DCC Sound Decoders but there’s no comparison for use in American Steamers. Massoth is coming out with a new upgraded DCC Sound Decoder in October, the XLSC, and hopefully the chuff quality will be significantly improved compared to their current American Steamer’s sound files.
