Large Scale Central

Erwin, TN. Depot

Beautiful restored depot in Erwin, TN. Now used as a library.

The depot fronts CSX’s Erwin Yard. This empty coal train passed while I was there.

Shots from the yard.

A few miles down the road I found a nice spot to shoot the mainline. “S” curves here

On that three story brick building, what is the large, rusty silver cylindrical object? Some kind of fire escape, maybe?

Nice shots Ralph. Any idea on Rays question, definitely not a fire escape

My guess would be an air duct for a heating system added years ago. Ralph

Ralph,

nice shots of both, the depot and the trains…

Nice shots Ralph. My guess on the cylinder is some kind of dust or scrap collection system. Was this building a shop at one time?

No idea Jon. My first thought was also a dust collection system. But it is obvious the windows were replaced. The lower level no longer has the "arch" windows like the station. Probably done back in the 60's or 70's. I would think the duct work would have been removed then if it was no longer needed. So I think the system must have still been needed, at least back when the windows were replaced. Ralph

could it be a vetilation system of some kind?

How about a cylindrical fire escape? Like a corkscrew slide.

I think it’s a missle silo…

I have seen this before and I do believe it’s a ventilation system. Just don’t understand the 1/4 open windows incorporated into it.

you sure those windows are 1/4 open??? could just be shorter windows…

I do belive the man is right. The windows are not open at all they are just smaller windows.

Good eyes for a old guy.
