It is has had constant attention over the period since its building and this is just more of the repairs and maintenance that is needed with old structures, especially those in remote and hostile environments. This is not a new story it was already reported - hence the plans - a little while ago. Sadly it is the Fakebook type of news that that newspaper is well known for.
Even so it is tourists and railfans to the area. Had the line closed some years ago I guess the viaduct would have been demolished, probably using explosives. The government person responsible for saving it for posterity is a well known rail fan - I expect his tv travel reports are screened in North America.

Cool photo too. It takes real effort to get to take a photo like that on the Moors. That’s Pen-y-Ghent in the background, one of the highest peaks in that area.
If I remember correctly, the powers-that-be wanted to close the whole of the Settle-Carlisle line, where this lovely viaduct is situated, in the middle of nowhere in the Pennines. One factor was the repairs for the viaduct, they claimed, would cost Millions and Millions of GBP. I think they finally got the cost of the repairs down to a mere $1M and the line stayed open.

Daily Mail rebelled against my employment of an ad blocker but the BBC did not. I understand the business reasons and I have my reasons, and they are pretty much irreconcilable.
(some Brits rebelling against a Yank? There might be a certain sort of irony somewhere within that.)

In its application for planning consent to the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, Network Rail say “a programme of remedial interventions is required to prevent these defects escalating into a more significant and complex concern”.
