Engine No.3 of the Ottawa and Gatineau Railway

This photo was posted on Facebook Engine No.3 of the Ottawa and Gatineau Railway on railway turntable." Dated to March 1899. Love the way it captures the atmosphere of old time railroading in the winter.

Do you only get 1’ deep snows? Not a very tall plow.

Nice pic. Shows the proper boiler for a 4-4-0, my Hartland is a course short.

John

Did that line used to run on the north side of the river out to Gatineau? I know there’s an old trolley line that used to run there. Can still see parts of it.

Yes John, the picture shows one with the long smoke-box and proper wagon-top boiler. To my eye the cab is a bit short compared to the boiler, but that’s because I prefer the Americans with smaller boilers. And yes, the Heartland 4-4-0 American has a boiler that is a bit too short. I started a bash a while back to extend the boiler on mine, but I haven’t worked on it for quite a while.

The Ottawa and Gatineau ran north from Hull to Maniwaki on the North side of the Ottawa and was leased to the CPR in 1902.

Found this poster for the Ottawa Gatineau Railroad from 1901 still hopeful they could make a go of it? Leased to CPR the next year.

That’s a great little loco!
