Large Scale Central

Engine containment

Now that I am in the big leagues with more than one engine, I need to develop some way of storing, transporting, launching them. I have seen what seems to be an open ended cage with some means of pressure from the top to keep it from rolling out. But I’m not sure how safe the engine is when crammed in the trunk of a car prior to going to a meet. Any ideas and/or pix would be appreciated.

There are many like this. As you surf, you will find many of them, some better, some not so… This one should fill your needs. YOu can modify it to fit your locomotive(s).

Those have traveled from PA, to IL, to Ottawa, to Mass. to VA and several other points on the compass with no damages. They were quick and cheap to make. Others have modified them with the sides higher and the handle down inside the sides so they can be stacked.

I know we were on this subject once but I didn’t need it then. Now I do. I can build that neat engine carrier and wcll but how are you carrying rolling stock?

with these…and a lot of foam padding…

I can get about 8 cars in one.

I use a foam-lined toodbox to carry the locomotives to and from shows. I use the plastic ones with the tool bins in the lid, so I can carry some basic tools as well. (Usually steam-up related tools.) The rolling stock gets placed in large under-bed storage totes, with old towels for padding. I can get three or four pieces of rolling stock per case. Three of those cases, and one tool box for the loco fits nicely on a folding luggage cart, and is not too unwieldy to roll from the parking lot to the display. I must admit, though, it’s times like that when I’m most jealous of the N-scale guys who carry a 100-car train in a friggin’ shoebox!

At the house, I just hand carry the locos from their normal perch on the shelves in the family room out to the railroad. I’m working on designing and building an outdoor storage shed so I don’t have to cart the rolling stock in and out every time.

K

Since I’m carrying from downstairs, or the garage, I wanted something that only took one hand, so I could open doors easily This one is styrene:

And one from wood:

Do I see dog wiz stains?

I made this

to carry the complete train. The clamshell lid/cover drops down over the handle for one handed carrying. I also band the lower portion of the clamshell so it does not open. But it turned out to heavy with the engine. Thus I’m looking for a separate carrier for engines. I like what Steve posted, particularly with the re-railer. Thanks to all for you input.

Bruce,

Did you do a write up article up about these rolling stock carriers?

Ric,
If I did, I sure don’t remember…but that goes for most of the stuff I do.

memory is the second thing to go…

Okay Bruce, no problem. Do they ride on the axles on a board basically like 1 5/8 inch wide? The stick that holds them in, is it held on with Velcro? I can’t make that part out. Thanks for the reply.

Ric, I’m sure Bruce did an article on them just don’t remember whether for GR or LSC or the other place. And it seems about the same time as Matheson textiles

There are some good pics on Bruce’s web site that explain a lot.

Steve,

Thanks for explaining what Bruce can’t remember.

Bruce,

You really should review your own writings, there is some good information out there.

Dave,

I remember it about that same time, thanks. Boy, I’ll tell you this 1:20.3 stuff is big. When you try to haul it around.

I think that's Rooster crap you see........;)

Well here is what I came up with as a means of transporting an engine

Much like what many of you are already doing,

Then I put sides on it with foam inside to grip the engine. The little compartment over the tender holds the remote and charger.

Then I put a lid on it to hold both the sides in tight and contain the ramp. The lid acts as a ramp tilting the carrier.

A latch swivels to the “carry” position to secure the lid. Now if I put as much effort into my RR as I did with this I would be up and running. Bill

Now, dang, that lid and sides is nifty!

Bill… That’s a neat carrier… is it plywood???
