Engine Carriers

Mike Williams and I got together today to build another carrier and document the entire process from cutting the parts, drilling the aluminum, and assembling everything together with a detailed description of what parts went where. This way everyone would know the proper process of building this carrier.

Unfortunately this must be a popular idea because all of the 2" aluminum angle in our area is gone. The normal places we get it at, Home Depot and Lowes are out. So Mike is going to check the Spokane area and if he can find a piece we will try this again next week.

Sorry guys, we tried.

Well I finally finished my first engine carrier following the design provided by Steve/Chuck. I built it to fit my Bachmann C-19. Their instructions were very clear so construction proceeded at a pretty fast place for me.

The two photos below show the completed carrier. I used all poplar wood including the ends and finished with a clear coat. You might notice that I designed the length to fit some of the original foam packing pieces. Why not?

Of course I had to attempt a few improvements. A minor one was the use of clevis pins instead of cotter pins. I thought they’d be a little more substantial.

The other change that I made could be adopted by those who have already built one. I really couldn’t figure out how the engine was held in place at the open end so I cut the upper side pieces a 1/4" shorter to allow for an end piece. Below is a photo from the side showing how the new piece of 1/4" plywood fits in the gap.

Below is the plywood piece a cut showing the holes for the pins. The addition of the piece also provides extra support to keep the bottom of the carrier from spreading apart.

All in all it was a fun and easy project and the first of many I plan to build. Thanks guys.

I like it, Doc, and its an easy retrofit, too.

I also used somewhat the same idea to hold mine in. I will post a pic later.

My end piece looks like this:

I added foam just above the couple.

I am using cotter pins to hold it in.

Thanks for the help!
