ECLSTS Spring 2010 model contest

I got pics of most of the models. I think the judging was fine in the individual categories but the judges seemed to be pretty clueless when it came to the overall contest (as usual). Big and dirty seems to rule in the overall judging (as usual) but hey that’s just my opinion. There were some very fine models. Lousy pics due to the terrible lighting (its darker than a home depot). The main table -

Bruce Chandler’s models - 1:20 EBT based Mikado (1st scratch locos), ventilated boxcar (3rd kitbash rolling stock), and logging caboose

Alan Friedland’s 1:29 CNJ boxcab (2nd scratch locos)

My 7/8n2 boxcab (1st whimsical) and slab wagon (3rd scratch rolling stock)

This rock quarry diorama (though categorized in structures???) took 1st scratch structures and best in show (really?). Nicely done but best in show? Hardly

Doc Watson’s amazing 1:20 “Mary Alice” private car was clearly the “Best in Show” but only got 1st scratch rolling stock! (much better pics here - http://www.mylargescale.com/Community/Forums/tabid/56/aff/21/aft/114917/afv/topic/Default.aspx )

This 1:29 B&O 2-10-2 (done by Paul Rose, I think) took 1st kitbash locos

Dave Marconi’s mega station in 1:24(?) took 2nd scratch structures (but should have been 1st)

This little coaling station took 3rd scratch structures -

This well done diorama with rusty and graffitied hoppers took 2nd dioramas

This odd “critter control” car was entered in scratch rolling stock instead of whimsical -

Thanks for the comment Brian. That’s 1/29th on the scale. Nice work on both of yours also.

I agree the quarry should not have been in the structure category but nice work all around,

Nice models. I really liked that box car. Most of them were not their by the time I left friday. Guess I have to stay for the weekend next year.

If SWMBO will let you out that long :) :) ;)

I think the judges, and a lot of lookers, missed some of the detail of Dave’s station due to table height (most of what you see if you don’t bend down is all those beautiful hand cut shingles & the tower) Also, they may not have looked at the back where much more detail existed (dormers & vent stacks).

I think you hit the nail on the head Brian with the statement that the judges like “Big and Dirty”. Dave modeled the station in it’s heyday. Maybe if it had a caving in roof, broken windows and falling off paint he would have taken first

BTW Brain - sorry I missed you at the show. I was sitting behind the time-saver when you were talking to Ric, but didn’t realize it was you until after you had left. Never did see you again to introduce myself.

What are you talking about Jon? What about when I put my arm around you and gave you a big sloppy kiss goodbye (okay, I made up the kiss part)?

I told Hollywood to turn "my side" out to the crowd :D Congratulations to Bruce, Brian and Dave Marconi. Ralph

Oops - It wasn’t you I missed - It was Mike O’Malley. I blame the Mad Cow.

LOL. She has me wipped. The problem is if I stayed too late she can easily tear up the layout when Im gone. Then i would have been sleeping in the chicken coop, unless you guys want to adopt me. LOL

Next year Im going to bring the whole crew down. But you guys have to occupy the boss while I shop.

Just go out with Andy and she won’t know you bought anything
