ECLSTS 3D Printer Presentation on Friday

Good day, all - I will be making a presentation at next week’s East Coast Large Scale Train Show on Friday, March 21.

The two hour session will start with an overview of 3D printing and software that you can use to design your own items. I’ll bring along my Afinia printer and a number of sample items that I have printed in the last 10 months.

The second half of the presentation will be on electronics & various gizmos and gadgets that you can build to enhance your railroad.

I am scheduled to talk from 9:30 till 11:30 - I hope to see some of you there!

If there are any specific questions that you would like me to address at the workshop please let me know.

thanks!

dave

I hope you guys have a PA system this year as it is always hard to hear with all the background noise.

looking forward to your presentation.

Nico - I don’t think a PA system is available - how about sitting up front? I am pretty good at projecting my voice - that should help!

See you next week

dave

If I dont make the presentation, be sure to stop by the Alcove and say howdy.

How long does it take 3D printer to make a 1:29 (recent style) rolling stock brake wheel ?

Sounds like another enlightening presentation !

Doug - are you referring to something like this?

I have a small portable PA that I could bring and have for you at “The Alcove” IF I can get there in time. There would need to be power available.

Jon - I hope it is not necessary as such things tend to tie one down - I move around a lot! — if Nico sits up front I am sure he will be able to hear me - I was a classroom teacher for 35 years and can project rather well!

thanks

dave

OK, I’ve just decided to brave the rush hour and try to get there in time for that. Should be a fun one.

Good deal, Bruce - I’ll see you Friday!

Someone video tape this presentation for those of us on the “WEST” coast that can’t make the show. I would love to be there but way to far to drive. LOL

YES Dave That brake wheel . . . . to replace some antiquated ones on a lot of rolling stock from a certain manufacturer

A couple yrs ago, I was chatting with a regional 3d printer user/seller about viability/cost but never got around to packaging pictures and data for him to create requisite digital file for a 1:29th 3D creation. I told him if doable for a palatable price point at least 50 pcs and there are very likely a few others who would be interested…

A regional resin product creator said with his tech’ it just wouldn’t be viable as it is too fine … too much flashing would result.

thanks

Chuck, yea Dave can project his voice, but I doubt he can project it that far.

Doug - I did some tests yesterday and found that the wheel in 1/29 scale is too small and detailed to get a good print with the equipment and software that I have.

I posted some photos on my web page. Have a look:

There are other options. The new resin printers are frequently used by jewelers to make masters for molding jewelry - they are very high resolution with a corresponding high price!

You can also send drawings to Shapeways and have them print in resin or metal - again, high resolution is available.

Doug,

Burl Rice is offering a few 3D prints from Shapeway. Great for casting.

THANKS Dave for taking the time from your busy schedule to design and run a test print !

It certainly does look real rough ! I don’t recall small similiar to the brake wheel items (small/thin) coming out of the machine being demo’d at past ST. I’m sure what software he used but I pretty sure it was “makerbot” printer.

Going to send over some data to GLX(sp?) of Ottawa and get his feedback. At least I’ll finally have everything gathered together to share with the makerbot user at ST"14.

Thanks Craig too !

David,

There should be some space available in the Alcove to display your equipment if you do not have a booth or other place to drop anchor.

Thanks for the offer, Ric - I will stop by but will not be staying long enough to take advantage of your offer - I have to get back to Pittsburgh after my presentation.

Thanks again!
