ECLSTS 2020

With the exception of the Drag & Brag, I really haven’t enjoyed the show for the last few years. Last year was a last minute decision and in the long run not really worth the drive for a few hours with friends. The extra distance to Timonium pretty much sealed it for me. I’d rather commit to getting to Ken’s early on Friday and have 2 1/2 days with friends.

I hope those that do go have a great time.

John, understood, but know that you’ll be missed.

Almost sounds depressing. I’m getting the impression that the show will not make it to next year…too bad.

The ECLSTS brought together a great number of Friendships. It was a fun occasion for many years. I always found that the highlight of the occasion was how the social part of the occasion was most equal to the show itself.

I feel that leaving York was its final breath, along with possibly poor planning, and poor lack of Enthusiastic COMMUNICATION.

Only those close to the lad at Star Hobbies can tell how they were attempting to manage the show, and promote it with manufacturers, and the public. But I got the impression that was the weakness…

Maybe I’m reading it wrong, maybe they were actually doing a great job, and I’m just not in the loop to know. I wish them well. I wish I was up to another 12 hour drive. I wish I could again meet all the GREAT people I have met there over the years again…truly GREAT people…

Some, I’ll meet at the Invasion…some I’ll still hear from, Some I’ll chat with on LSC…The ECLSTS has had a great run…

Thank you, everyone.

It may be a bit premature to ring the bell on the show. It will be closer for some, further for others. Without being an insider, it seems to me they had a choice between not moving it this year (and not having a show since York was booked) OR moving it and have a show. So, the show goes on. I had given up on the show years ago as it does nothing for me. I enjoyed the drag and brag as it evolved into an event in its own way. This year, it appears that the drag and brag will not be the “usual”. So a few less folks may attend either the show or the drag and brag. The show always got a lot more attendance anyway., but it’s not time to sell the show short. I still attend other events that are far less popular than either.

[soapbox: on]

Let us not start digging a grave for the show yet. Changes had to be made once the show was forced out of York.

So we are starting a new era in Large Scale Railroading. There will be bumps for the first time. Let’s work out details this year like where our “Home Motel” with the Drag & Brag will be. If we are in different motels, check them out and give suggestions for next year. Same for finding places to eat and gather. There will be growing pains.

I am not ready to give up on the friendships I have made at ECLSTS. Let’s work together to make it better. We have an opportunity to make it whatever we want.

[soapbox: off]

I’m sorry to say that I can’t make this year either. It’s my wife’s 80th birthday that weekend and it’s the only reason I’m not going. I was at York last year and really enjoyed the visit with my LSC friends, although I missed Visiting with Bruce and Bob. Health allowing I will certainly be there next year. I hate missing Cliff’s great windmill. BTW, what my wife’s party is costing me could easily get me several new locomotives.

Doc

Be sad to miss ya, Doc! But that’s a big BD, best wishes for you both on that!

Along the lines of what Fred said, I do feel sad about some folks no longer being able to come, like Jon and Fred, and I’m sure there’ll be others.

But like Lou says, at least Star stepped up to the plate; and this will be a great time to stake things out, do some recon. It won’t be our best year this time, but afterwards we’ll know far more about the hotels & eateries, and also the venue – and where we might set up an Alcove in 2021. Where perhaps Lou or Ric will be able to set up their Timesaver once again?

Anyway Bruce, I need you and Rooster to help me scope out the Embassy Suites bar, see how it compares to the York Wyndham Grille… A vital stat we need to nail down. And hopefully, others will report in on their stays at the other “official” show hotels.

Nothing’s permanent…unless you’re dead. It’s just THIS year. It’s all about going forward from here - and I applaud the pioneers…(I just have too many arrows at this point!) And, I was never much of a bar person, so you guys can scope all that on your own, anyway! (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-embarassed.gif)

Hey…look forward to the next time! Or, if you’re like me, I’m REALLY looking forward to KOPS!(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

Bruce, would it have made a difference if I said I was using the word “bar” in a metaphorical sense only? (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)Just kidding, haha! Naah, I was using it symbolically, not metaphorically.

Understood, you’ll be missed though. I’ve always shown up to the D&B early to buy whatever cast-off tools you were selling! Ah, those were the days… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

I think the real thing that needs to be scoped out: Can the Embassy Suites handle check ins? The Holidome/Wyndham never seemed to get the knack. Too many of us spent too many hours waiting for our room to be ready. (Who knew that people would want to check out?)

Personally, I’ll miss eating at the Lyndon Diner…(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Yes, Ken, that was the regular departure party, where we said our “So longs” to our friends, as we left on the Sunday mornings for home.

Their menu:

The above is four blocks (at most) south of the fair grounds on York Rd (which fronts the grounds). It is on the east side or left as you travel. Should be like the Lyndon if that helps. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

David Thanks for that as it does help as I do like my Diner’s

I have a reservation, but not at the show hotel, tried there but couldn’t get the discount code to work, maybe the block of rooms were booked. Anyway I booked at the Sheraton about 12 minutes south of the fair grounds and with my AAA discount it only cost about $5 more a night than the show rate. Bad news, no bar but they do have an onsite restaurant for those unfamiliar with the demographics of the area and aren’t comfortable exploring unfamiliar areas after dark. As for the show hotel it seemed a bit of overkill to get a suite for a single person for two nights !

This is the earliest I’ve ever made reservations, I never had any trouble getting into the hotel in York even as late as two weeks before the show.

I’m still on the fence about going, travel wise the distance is about the same from the central Ohio area, the best thing about the new location is that the PA turnpike is no longer the shortest route which would save me $50 in tolls for the round trip. Other than that I can’t get excited for the show. It used to be fun to check out all the new products but there is precious little of that anymore and what there is is of little interest to me. With no common gathering point at the show and no dedicated place for the D&B I find it hard to get motivated.

As do those of us who used to meet up at the Lyndon Joseph (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Gary, I always thought your Lancaster was the PA one, but just noticed it was the OH version. Yeah, long drive!
