Large Scale Central

ECLSTS 2020

Reading through the area Hotels “Holiday Inn Timonium” has Chilis:

We serve a hot and cold breakfast buffet every morning from 6:30am to 9:30am for a nominal fee. Opening at 11am, Chili’s Restaurant and Lounge is accessible through our lobby. For your convenience, room service is available from 6:30am-11pm.

Hope this clarifies some questions and considerations.(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Edit to add:

To those of you who look at the satellite views of the fair grounds and area and are unfamiliar with the site:

The large building at the NW corner of the fair grounds is the Cow Palace

Between the Cow Palace and I83 you will see a large parking lot with a semi circle area in the middle. This is fair grounds parking, but note that the walk way does cross the Light Rail system.

OK, since I am going to the train show at Timonium on Saturday 6 April, I have contacted the nearby Holiday Inn and asked about a room for our Friday night social (drag and brag) event on what I assume is Friday 27 March, 2020, the date is not critical at this time.

They, of course will be happy to work with us. So I have an appointment to visit the hotel on Saturday afternoon after I leave the show to scope it out.

Will report back after that takes place.

Regards

Jerry

I’ll keep an eye out for you Jerry as I’m thinking of going.(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

For those of you that have never been to the Timonium Show, this is the first room you see upon entering.

Then this is the room off to the left.

This is the room to the right looking from the back to the front of the building. This is where they have activities for the kids.

So it’s a BIG place, I wonder how much of it we will be able to fill?

Thanks for the pictures, Lou. Looks like plenty of space for the large layouts.

You know a railroad really missed at the 2019 event was Clem’s Warrior’s Run, 1:20.3. I know he had the fire, but the layout was in a trailer. And he was at the 2017 ECLSTS. We didn’t make 2018, so I’m blank on his attendance then. Anybody heard from him?

He was there last year, Ric. I don’t know why he wasn’t there this year.

It was related to me by someone that Clem had fallen and was not getting around well enough to attend the show. Just passing on a rumor !

Yes; I think he posted that on Facebook. Ric - He’s active there daily so look him up. More in to Mini Coopers and Slot cars these days, but still has the layout. It was in Scranton in January.

I passed on the concerns. Response from Clem:

“Getting much better by the day! Thanks”

Thank you guys for the follow up. Good to hear.

Timonium Update: (Sort of…)

I did go to the Great Scale Model Train show on Sunday at the Maryland State Fair Grounds in Timonium, MD, the projected site of ECLSTS 2020. I had said I would check out the Holiday Inn Express and possibly other Holiday inn for meeting rooms, and the like.

However, I realized I was most likely jumping the gun here, as the show location, dates, and hotel are not yet fully developed. So it seemed to me that this issue would be better served by speaking to Star Hobby and finding out the status. What I found out was, yes, they are working to get the show to Timonium, and are talking to various hotels about a group rate. Since this is still a developing situation, they suggested I email them in 3-4 weeks to find out status at that time. I plan to do so, and assuming that a hotel (or more then one?) is selected, I will then contact them to follow up on a party room for the drag and brag. I did mention that the LSC crew would appreciate the availability of a party room (most all hotels have that) and a bar (not all hotels have one).

So that is where we are, I will keep tabs on this and let you all know as things develop.

Jerry

The LSC crew would appreciate…a bar…

What exactly are you implying? (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)(https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)(https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

I thought a bar was a necessity, like bathrooms…well, even the lack of bathrooms could be worked around, but not the lack of a bar.

Thanks for posting those Lou. I was at the all-scales train show there yesterday (with Jerry and our buddy Dwight), and was again struck by the enormity of the place.

So… WARNING! This is all just FWIW, which may be zero! I’m merely conveying what’s publicly viewable, and offering a few personal comments.

That disclaimer out of the way… I’ve been wondering the same thing as Lou. So out of curiosity, I went to http://www.marylandstatefair.com/general-info/facilities to check square footage, and here’s what they say:

The Cow Palace is easily the most versatile building on the Fairgrounds. It covers 158,400 square feet overall. The Cow Palace is divided into three distinct areas/sections - 24,000 square feet, 62,400 square feet and 72,000 square feet.

For a comparison with York’s Memorial Hall, I went to http://yorkexpo.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/MAIE-MemHall-proof.pdf, which says the hall…

“features two separate exhibit areas (over 58,000 square feet).” Reading further, the size of the two exhibit halls totals to 57,466 SF.

Since Memorial Hall wasn’t really filled this year, ~58ksf seemed a little too ample. And I can’t imagine that Star would wan’t to rent an additional 100ksf beyond that. So maybe they would want to arrange for the center hall (first of Lou’s pics), because that’s the main branch-point for the left and right halls, and has the concessions area at its rear. And if the smaller exhibition hall is rented as well, that’s 86,400 square feet – double what is probably really needed.

So, maybe we won’t need the full cow palace, but will only get the smaller hall, and hopefully the concessions area of the center hall… Anyway, Star’s got some challenging choices to make, especially if vendors are less committal than in earlier years.

Regardless, I hope we can support their effort as best we can; and if only part of the CP is used, it’ll still be HUGE, and very much worth attending!

My 2 cents,

===>Cliffy

It may be a bit late to plan next year’s show, if the deal has not been struck yet.

Fred, if they are already naming the place, it kinda sounds to me like some kind of deal has been struck.

Too much rain this year in Canada? (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

….correction…TOO MUCH SNOW…

As Cliff stated we should “Thank” and appreciate the boys at Star Hobby for keeping the show going!

OK an update on ECLSTS 2020

I spoke with Dan at Star Hobby, and he confirmed that the show will be in Timonium, MD state fairgrounds on

13 and 14 March 2020.

The new venue and dates are on the ECLSTS web site, but he had not yet had a chance to change all the York centric graphics

He is working on hotels to find a good rate, and I will try to keep in contact with him in that regard. I can then follow up on the hotel regarding the party room, beer kegs, cases of lickker, etc…
