A new ‘trial’ scheme to be implemented in Australia, mid-year and then to be extended worldwide, is a requirement to force sellers to use PayPal for ALL transactions. Buyers will not be able to use any other means, such as cheque, money order, bank draft, etc. EBay explain that the move makes online shopping a more safer proposition for the buyer and that sellers will reap the benefit of increased sales. Sellers to date do not agree. The approximate 2.4% PayPal charge will incidently reap PayPal an increase in income of many millions of dollars in Australia alone. Am I being cynical, or is the online safety issue a subtefuge for increasing EBay’s dwindling profits. This move is sure to drive away both sellers and buyers in droves.
I use Paypal all the time, but I agree, this is just an excuse to force people to use Paypal and thus collect more fees.
Tim,
Between eBay and their PayPal they screwed up one of my transactions in such a Royal manner, that I will not be using PayPal ever again! Mind you they have been asking me to reconsider on several occasions, it will be a very, very, very cold day in Hell before that happens!
PS in my past eBay dealings only small problems with sellers; there are apparently a number of sellers who are unable to read or don’t comprehend written instructions (Sheesh I should use them as Beta testers for the next item that needs assembly instructions!).
Those little problems were nothing compared with the ineptitude at eBay and PayPal; if you ever need to be reminded just how stupid some people are: talk to PayPal’s tech support a few times.
It’s purely a money thing. If they were truely out to protect our interests they would do it for free when they made it mandatory.
Guess who owns Paypal? Ebay does so they hit you on both sides with fees, and they make money on both ends up front with insertion fees, and final fees, and then in the end with Paypal fees on the sellers. Just completed a $300 transaction all fees totaled up to $32.81 total.
I’ve been happy with PayPal, on buying and selling. I know I pay for it, but getting paid for a sale the next day is lots better than waiting around for a week to get a MO/check. And, if I buy with it, they usually ship it the next day. Not good to force it on everyone though. I would think that would scare of new seller/buyers who are leery of buying on ebay anyway and also having to sign up with PayPal might dissuade some. Jerry
Didn’t I read someplace that Paypain is being sued for acting like a bank when they really aren’t?
Paypain’s resolution center is a JOKE. As is evilBay’s Safe Harbor. I’m getting tired of their BS, and their fee structure that makes them more money than me on anythingf I sell…so if they require me to accept Paypain, I’ll stop listing altogether
Jerry I absolutely agree with you. I enjoy the use for buying and selling. I think what people here are missing is no body says you have to use Ebay. However, if you do it is clear what is being charged up front so if you don’t like it don’t use it.
Apart from the fees as a seller, one of my main concerns is that should a dispute arise with a buyer, then PayPal, ‘by default’, generally sides with the buyer, leaving the seller without goods and also out of pocket, as PayPal will reclaim any money paid to the seller.
If this new ploy is successful then it will be coming to a country near you. On Australian eBay, one does not have the ‘right’ to set a reserve price on a listing. Now with increased eBay fees and compulsory PayPal as well (in June this year), then the future is bleak. If it is such a great idea then why not start with a large market like the United States or Germany. If online security is their prime concern then why not protect a bigger market.

I’m not so sure we’re missing anything, least of all having to be bothered with eBay and/or PayPal.
Jerry and Mike.
Your experiences match mine. Over 300 transactions all over the world, including Argentina, Belarus, Bolivia, Portugal and Ukraine, all without any problems. If I have any doubts, I use my credit card thru PayPal and their resolution becomes primary.

I never said I didn"t have a choice in the matter, I have used paypal without any problems over the last two years, and have been pleased with the service and no problems. So far it is like everything else its a “CHOICE”, my comment was as to them forcing it on anyone, and also wanted to inform people that theres a double whammy there because ebay owns BOTH!! But like one other person said if you want your money quick, and safely you are kind of required to go through them for the sale. There is NO charge to the “BUYER” There ya go now they have another way to make money!! “NOW " lets hear the “ROAR” of the BUYERS? If the shoe was on both feet, there may be “MORE” concern from the other side of the fence! As far as the comment on “losing money” when selling I agree, The necessary for me at this time “Evil Bay”. My opinion is that and like it “ALWAYS” has been and probably will “ALWAYS” be are two things 1. It is a good place to buy, but NOT to sell! 2. Doing so is a choice, and the lesser of TWO EVILS for me personally right now for my own personal no one else’s reasons, and I am kind of a captive user at this time! When you get right down to it and I AM ONE OF THEM, so you don’t need to slam me for talking out of both sides of my mouth when I say we are " cheap”! can’t , and don’t want to use the word i’m thinking of we, are all “Cheapy Cheapy Cheapy” buyers by human nature!! and even more so as to the state of our economy this day and age, you almost have to be. Thats “MY OPINION” and i’m sticking to it!

Personaly I will not sell anything on ebay with out using Paypal. Its the only form of payment I will take. Also I will not buy anything off ebay unless the seller takes paypal. I got taken one time using a check, never again. I am one for chose and do not like having something forced on me. As a seller, I alread know up front there is a cost, as a buyer, I willing to pay a fee to the seller, but I will figure that in with the shipping and it all impacts how much I am willing to bid on a item. If it cost me more on ebay then in the hobby shop why buy at Ebay. I will agree with Jerry, I am cheep, or as I would like to think smart with my money.
If Ebay tickes enought people off then some other sites might get that business. I reason I use Ebay is because thats were the people are. Piss us all off and we will go some were new. I personaly check this site first now to see if there is anaything I need and if its in a aprice range I’m willing to pay.

The auctions here have only been in existence a few months. Even ebay took years to really catch on.
eBay will do what eBay does. Only if the see a major decline in income will they reverse any fee increases. If ya don’t like it, don’t sell there.
As for LSC Auctions… Our audience is, for now, too small. I put several NIB items up for less than you can buy from on-line discounters and only broke reserve on one. I’d rather keep them than give them away, so the reserve was set for the smallest amount that I was willing to take. On eBay they probably would have sold for MSRP, but then the fees would suck much of the profit out.
I did sell a few of the cars off-line after the auction closed at a “package deal” price. All in all, I think the classifieds work better.
Trouble is I can’t use the classifieds. Bob has asked that anyone doing more than private sales’ such as a regular Ebayer, not use them and use the auctions or an ad.
I had no worse luck here on some items than I did on Ebay. So some things just didn’t sell. Others I did far better onEbay, due mostly to the larger audience.
I will not take PayPal for most of my auctions. Too much money. My account is the old personal type. They keep wanting me to “upgrade” and pay all kinds of fees. Not happening. I will use PayPal for international sales but ONLY if the payment is not a credit card or debit card funded payment.
Ebay doesn’t like that either but I’ll work around them until I can’t then I’ll go elsewhere. There are several other Firearms related auction site without all the problems and rules. I use them for items Ebay no longer lets me list.
Someone will come along and put up another auction site to address the issues with Ebay. It may take a while like Ebay did but it will happen.

Andre,
you may or may not be aware that American PayPal bases its structure on a member’s actual bank account, i.e., not credit card based. This way American members are able to have their shipping addresses ‘confirmed’ and thus comply with PayPal’s protection policy. For most international markets, PayPal bases its structure on credit card payments and thus most international shipping addresses are ‘unconfirmed’, thus not complying with their protection policy. This is one of PayPal’s failings. I am a verified PayPal account holder, with several thousand eBay/PayPal transactions and yet I will always have an ‘unconfirmed’ address and not meet PayPal’s ‘confirmed’ address protection policy. By limiting your sales to bank account funded PayPal accounts then, in effect, you are ruling out sales outside of the United States. I have heard that PayPal was attempting to confirm addresses of members, who are not American bank account sourced members, but have not heard any recent statements to this effect.
As mentioned already Pay-pal is the easiest and quickest way to purchase goods online. I tend toward it because, firstly, there are no fees (unlike my credit card), secondly, the conversion rate on my $AUD is better than the credit card. Thirdly, there seems to be a trend online towards more people/business using pay-pal.
I live in South Australia and my Pay-pal account is direct debited from by bank account. The credit card was used initially, until I reached a set limit in one month and then I could’nt purchase any more through them until I confimed a bank account. This idea I like, also because I can’t spend money I don’t have which I can do on credit.
Just my 2c worth
