Large Scale Central

East Broad Top Baggage/Express #29

This is a shortened Accucraft J&S coach with G.A.L. (http://www.thegalline.com) full baggage sides.

The original car is 36’ 2" so I decided to go for it and shorten the Accucraft car. The kit is the same full baggage that I made a few months ago:

We designed the kit with scribed siding on the sides, but blank on the reverse (not that you can laser cut both sides very easily!) Alan at G.A.L. did a great job of cutting the battens so you can order and make either version. The 4-panel door on the original car is carefully sized so that if you only use 2 panels, you get a 36’ 2" car. In practise, with the big quarter-round door frame, you need a 2-panel door from G.A.L. with lots of space at the side to glue it behind the walls. Cutting the frame was easy - and it is U channel so you can re-glue it with strengthening in the slots. The roof was easy too, though you have to re-cover it with either masking tape or aluminum duct tape.

That looks great Pete. When I win the lottery I’ll have to give these kits a try.

That’s very nice, Pete. Are there new clerestory parts as well?

Hard to tell from the Gal Line website....

includes replacement car sides, windows, doors and is reversible for either planked or board and batten.

Another great model. How come all the cool passenger stock comes around when I’m out of work? me shakes fist

Pete, Very nice! I’m looking forward to seeing it in person at the Steamtown meet this weekend. Geoff

You just made up my mind about making it over to Scranton this weekend :)

Yep. The original has them sloping inwards at the top, so I chiseled out the tops of the existing windows and put a strip aliong the bottom.

This shows it better, but I cropped it as my camera shadow is on the rest!

There’s lots of other neat bits. Alan did the battens for the ends and window frames for inside the windows (the ends are thick so it looks better if the frames aren’t recessed all the way to the back. Geoff’s trick!) We also noted the end doors aren’t anything like the AMS car, so Alan cut them as well.

I reworked the truss rods with new support beams, as #29 doesn’t have any long queen posts. The steps are also reworked, as #29 has 3 steps, not two. For those who aren’t EBT fans, here’s the original.

It was originally in passenger green paint, but got demoted to MOW service and painted as a freight car. The G.A.L. website hasn’t been updated with the details of this project - Alan has been working on the steeplecab while I was playing trains in Florida, witing for me to finish it so we knew that it worked.

I'd have never guessed any cars would ever have them not vertical.
