What the heck is going on with Shad’s site?

Again with the Duke thing.

I’m about to call it a day, me.

I think I read somewhere that he posted it is the name of the Program he is using and does that when he works on the site somemtimes when he has to shut down for fix’s. I know a lot of us raised heck after we started to remove some of out sruff from our putters and mess up our stuff tr ying to fine if we had a virus… Lot of unhappy people.
It’s not a good program he has now… Lots of flaws in it.

Terry,
I have never had a problem visiting the site, but then I gave up my membership years ago. I ‘visit’, regularly to see the latest modelling projects but find that in general it is a very static site with little happening (mostly a rehash of items posted on other sites). One thing that has changed is that it seems to have become more like the Bachmann forum of old when the Thomas ‘kiddies’ took over. In case you have forgotten the experience, then open up the Bachmann ‘Thomas and Friends’ forum and you will see that nothing has changed there (wall to wall brats!).

I do find the Live Steam forum on the site very informative.

Hafta agree with Noel and Tim - and I’m coming round to the same opinion as Tim with regard to the puerile stuff getting on the threads. We have the likes of Greg and others of a similar level of experience making real contributions in electrically-driven stuff, and the Bednariks et al on the live-steam forum, but I often get the feeling that they are speaking to folks who prolly also talk to their breakfast.

And yes, I DO remember that awful time on the Bachmann forum, when it seemed to be run by five-year old with minimum skills in either keyboard or language.

sometimes i think, the whole internet idea is running wildly into the wrong direction.

i am participating in three largescale forums of english language.
most information is posted identically on all three of them - from the same authors. (for me a pure waste of time)
then there is that forum with the goofy software, that seems to be optimized for advertizers, but not for users.
the newest “genial coup” on another is the publication/copying of a thread about garden layout security (and other informations?) on facebook (sic!)

where are we going?

In circles around the sun.

Huh. Another crank we don’t need.

Everybody with any sense knows that we live on a flat world carried on four rather large elephants balanced on the back of a great turtle…

Korm,
you ask, “…where are we going?”

I feel that Bob has the right idea about a forum. He allows a degree of self moderation and only very rarely steps in when a topic is seen to be totally unrelated to the very reason this forum exists and that is model railroading. I do not see why one has to use a model railroading forum to voice to an audience his propoganda. It seems that forums these days drift away or are manipulated to conform with some construed notion that one can use a forum to mouth off on any topic. I applaud that Bob keeps this site intact and that, in the main, the users of the site remain cordial to one another.

The site to which Terry referred, some years ago was strictly moderated and no allowance was given to demean another member. Today that is not the case. There are several loudmouths who are well known for their acid tongues and their personal criticisms of other members. What irks me is that they are allowed to continue this behaviour with no input from moderators.

A case in point was a posting relating to the cost of running a site. Remember that the site has had a lot of problems lately after shifting to a new, possibly cheaper server. The person posting the question has owned and moderated several forums and no doubt knows value for money and obviously, the owner of the site was not getting value due the constant problems encountered since switching servers and software. I believe the switch may have had something to do with server security issues. How did the site owner respond? Well he replied “…It is none of your business!” One must take from this that he felt the only reason for the post was that the originator must have been implying that he was making a fortune out of running the site. Well the topic was eventually locked, but only after the resident loudmouth was seemingly allowed to pass a very disparaging comment about the member who raised the topic. There is simply too much politicing and favouritism afoot over there.

Tim,
first and for all - how dare you to publish such a weird idea? around the sun… tsss, tsss, tsss…

about the other topic:
i, myself have administrated a handfull of forums over the years. (not trains) the most expensive one did cost me about 30 euro (30 $) a year for the webspace.
the software was friendlier to the users, than that of the forum, we talk about. and every forum software i used was either free or included in the hosting.
the problem over there are the additional things.
twenty bucks for webstorage of about 500 pics is more or less adequate.
so what for are the dozen or so of advertizings? they can’t bring much more than a hundred bucks a year.
BUT (in capital letters) they need more bandwith and other software.
so everything passing over there is logical.

just not userfriendly.
to mention only the adventure of posting a pic over there, that is plain ridiculous.

the art of moderation is another thing altogether.
we all see, that some of the acid tongued loudmouths from over there, know well enough how to behave here on Bob’s site.

but back to the important things at hand - do you have anything against turtles and olifants?

12:42 pm Eastern US zone time. It’s down again.

Just thought you might like to know,
David Meashey

P.S. I thought olifants (or oliphants) were only found in Middle Earth? Anyway, if you want to know more about them, just ask Samwise Gamgee.

Korm,

As I mentioned on a certain German forum shortly before I called it quits (too many twits!): All fora will find their very own level, how high or low that level is depends strictly on the participants.
In essence it’s just like computers: GIGO (garbage in, garbage out).
It’s up to us to find the fora that we like and then stick with them; ignore the others and be happy. OTOH by all means go and visit some of those “rocket scientist” fora, if nothing else they will provide you with a good laugh.

I’m going in the garden and do some more cleaning up; slow going, but it’s going!

Wellllll Tim,

When I start reading in fora I always look at the name of the poster first - been around for long enough to know many of the Pappenheimers - and I often marvel at what lunacy they come up with. Case in point: how can one participate in x fora for more than a decade and still not get the hang on how to post a graphic file (JPEG, PNG whatever), or for that matter a link, so that the different browsers don’t get the hiccups (aka don’t display)? Does that mean a slow learner or early-onset Alzheimer? Get to read those same “pertinent” queries in two different languages and you really ask yourself: Mustn’t that hurt already?

As always strictly my opinion!

Well, a while back, we were told that MLS needed a new server, and a number of us put up $200 each to go “lifetime” to help the cause… the problem then was a slow server, we were told.

Recently, we have more outages, but I’m told it’s the software, and that we are a few updates behind.

This software here seems to work just fine…

I like to think I know how to post pictures over there, as well as links. I made a post a week ago and some of them showed up, others did not. All were done the same way. I tried to correct them, but to no avail. So, I’m not sure it matters what you know over there.

Over here, you just paste it in and it’s done automagically - like it has been ever since I joined this site. Why you need special tags is beyond me in this day and age.

That was one reason why I stopped posting their for a while. I coul not just copy and past my picture links like I do here.

Bruce,

I’m not talking about special code or such, that is always a bit of a bear for some. I’m talking about naming any file in such a manner that it will work, period. No fancy, schmanzy, la-la stuff, just straight “Only use lower case, upper case, under score and numbers. All in one uninterrupted row, no spaces etc.” If people haven’t learned that in the past 10 or 15 years and still look for the fault elsewhere instead of under their nose, welllll as I wrote: either very slow learners or early-onset Alzheimer!

The websites, homepages with exactly those short comings are legend, but that just means that there are a lot of those bozos out there. GRRRRRRR. :frowning:  :frowning:

BTW I’d hate to see what their filing system on their computers look like!

Dave, i knew it, that you would note the “oli” before the phants…

Hans, in a way we should be thankfull if some of the forums get less interesting or accessible.
somhow the days felt longer before the internet.
