Large Scale Central

Duck and cower

OK, so Dunakin and others, including me, got Black Phoebes. But we got ducks–a pair of mallards that have returned, prolly because they know a soft touch when they see one. Mom looks preggies and dad watches carefully to ensure that she’s not molested. But bring out some food (we’re goin’ with butter crackers for now) and both male and female will almost eat out of your hand. Or eat your hand! I have photos but am too lazy to post ‘em (Hey, nothin’ to see here. They’re ducks!).

One real question: if one were to go to say, Pet Smart, what kind of food would one buy that’s suitable for ducks?

BTW, we live in a town and have a tiny lawn, so it’s not like we’re on a farm somewhere. But we are near a huge preserve, so the ducks must come from there–pretty much every year, though I don’t know if these are the same ones as before (I didn’t get their names).

I had a duck when I was a kid and they love snails. I don’t remember what else we fed them.

We used to feed them just plain dried corn…the Mallards and Canada Geese seemed to like it.

It was available at the feed store in large bags.

I favor Critter Crunch

It figures that Rooster would know…

Well, sure. He’s been buying Rooster chow for some time now.

You need to be careful here. We’ve had ducks in our pool.

If the ducks “move in,” your place may become considered as a wetlands and it would not be legal to “molest” them if you wanted to get rid of them when your yard is full of guano.

I can’t believe nobody’s replied with these guys yet

Todd, yeah, I thought about being too duck friendly, but not having a pool or even a pond, I’m not too worried. Plus they have other lawns to hang out on. As for food, I’ll look into the stuff you guys mentioned. But like Todd cautions, I don’t want to become Duck Central. BTW, their poops, while messy, aren’t as bad as goose droppings. I’ve seen places in the Northwest and around Buffalo, where Canada Geese (eh?) have turned parks into toilets.

You must have me mistaken with someone else HJ ?

My uncle lives on a pond and he has swans that come to visit. He feeds them a loaf of bread. There were 2 adults and 3 babies. Now the babies are grown but one didn’t make it. Another one has a piece of its lower beak hanging off like it was attacked by a turtle maybe. My uncle calls that one beak boy. The swans are huge and can be aggresive. My uncles 90 pound black lab gives them a wide berth. 2 weeks ago my uncle opened his front door to one of them standing on the porch. Swans are not that graceful out of water but this one managed to walk up his beach across a road up his driveway then up 8 steps to his door.

He has ducks that visit too but the swans scare them away.

Todd Brody, call off PETA or whoever. No ducks today. Maybe they get Saturdays off.

Yiddish ducks maybe.
