Large Scale Central

Duck and cover!

Had something of an unexpected visitor today…

Fortunately, he did his hardest knocking about a mile or so east of us, but still graced us with lots and lots of this:

Which made a royal mess of things on the railroad (And I had just gotten it cleaned up!)

That’s some pretty thick plastic there…

Filling the tenders will have to wait for new chains.

Wesley’s Creamery is going for that al fresco experience.

Fortunately, we got off fairly easy, all things considered. The neighborhood and shopping mall where our friend sat his feet down was a lot worse off. I drove out to where things were the worst to drop off some photos and video at our live truck, and it was a mess! Right next to our live truck, a roughly 6’ square piece of siding from a shed, house, or something, that obviously flew a fair distance to land where it did. Puts the damage to the railroad in perspective real quick. And at least I’ve got a month to get it cleaned up before the convention. Later, K

Wow! Glad it was just the scale size building with the roof blown off… but I don’t envy you the cleanup either. Hopefully you’ll be back to making photo essays soon…

Kevin,

Be prompt and get your claims in to smAllstate so your reimbursement is soon to follow.

The inspection could be revealing.

Had a few of those come through here over the years. Made a lot of overtime cleaning up the mess at work and getting things back working, but that wasn’t much help to some people that lost quite a bit. Good to see your damage was minimal.

Hail that size can do some serious damage. Not to mention that twister.
Good to hear no serious damage to your home.

Kevin,

How about the roof of your home? Hail damage, there? Better get it checked out. Twisters are an interesting part of nature. Can’t predict them. Can’t fight them. Protect yourself and family and live to fight another day.
“Duck and cover” is a good plan. Sorry for your problems. Glad everyone is okay.

I remember when we lived in Moenchengladbach in the late '70’s that a humungous hailstorm hit the local area and totalled forty+ Porsches standing outside on the dealership lot.

Them’s powerful lump of ice, them.

I remember when we had a big hailstorm like that come through. I went out and took a look at the house and the attic vent was all busted up.

I was going to fix it myself, but decided to call my insurance company. They came out and took a look. I ended up getting a new roof and new siding.

Definitely call your agent!

Sorry for the destruction to the railroad, but happy you all are ok, and most other things are too…

Its a lot easier to fix the railroad then your home. Glad everyone was ok. Im sure with your talent you will have the RR up and running soon and looking even better. Just adds a more realistic touch to the RR.

Glad that you came thru it , hope that everyone also made it thru the storm .

Wow - I’ll add my glad your OK too. Not fun at all.

“Oh, the weather outside is frightful!”

If it’s close enough to see it’s too close! Glad the funnel missed you.

That area actually made world news…saw it today at lunch as a matter of fact. Glad the homestead is intact and “especially” the family!
As for the RR you wanted to modify that roof anyway right?
P.S. …neat funnel cloud shot

06/08/09 - 1833 - Just spoke to AndyC. He is in “duck and cover mode”. Stuff is headed right at him and moving quick, so he’ll be okay or deep dodo real quick. Both Jan and Jane got in it over to the west of us around Scott Air Force Base. WX is reporting damage, but Ladies have survived it well. Jane is waiting until it clears and Jan has made it home. Jan went through big hail, but quick look doesn’t show any damage to van. We’ll look better after this clears. I think this is the same front that nailed Kevin. Its moving east. Dennis P. and the guys in Indiana are the next on the stops of this freight train. (train related subject inserted)

Kevin,
I’m glad you missed the worst of the storm. It can be really scarry.

#1 grandson and I spent four hours cleaning up my layout today after dime sized hail and 65mph straight winds last night. I have an open house for the NMRA standards convention here in Wichita, this weekend. We didn’t get any structural damage to the home or layout, but had a mess that you can understand.

Whoa! Definitely too close for comfort.

We had a front blow through Monday that dumped two inches of rain in 15 minutes. No hail, fortunately.
The rain drops were so big, it felt like hail when they hit you.

Luckily, it mostly fizzled out, before it got here.... Mostly rain, not much wind, small hail, pea sized.... An inch and a half of rain, in about 30-35 miutes... It is quite a surprise, to look out the window, and realize, just how much water that really is, when you watch it flow down the waterway....
