Large Scale Central

Droolin'!

Mom turns 98 in October, and my brothers think it’s a good time for us to come to the US. It’s been over five years.

Kay and I have bought a round-the-world, so we can see a bit on the way over (Japan, Victoria BC) and the way back (northern and central Europe, where we’ll visit rellies). To satisfy her husband’s addiction, my long-suffering spouse has agreed to go on more train trips than are strictly necessary. Here are some of the things we’re planning:

  1. Bullet train, Tokyo - Osaka and back. My godfather was stationed in Wakayama during the US occupation, and reckoned it was a beautiful place. It’s close to Osaka, so we’ll stop there a couple of nights and take a day trip out on the local train.

  2. Pendolino train in Finland. This is a train that “leans” into curves, good for Finland where a lot the railway lines are curvy because the country’s so rugged.

  3. Stockholm - Copenhagen express. This goes across the Baltic on a bridge that becomes a tunnel, then a bridge again (the tunnel piece is to leave a channel for ships).

We are having a lot of fun planning this!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!

Sounds like a plan to me!

I work in Tokyo, commuting from UK, and this time mrs tac [who comes with me on the summer work trip] and I are going to Kyoto on the ‘Burret Train’. One of my colleagues actually lives in Osaka, and commutes every day by the 700 train!!!

Needless to say, HE does not pay the fares…Hitachi does that for him.

As for the PendoLEANo, please be advised that, like much to do with railways, it was a British invention. We have just got them back on the west coast high-speed mainline, but sad to say they had to be built elsewhere…

Enjoy!!!

These being the first words of your post, I was afraid they had something to do with the title of the post! ;)

Seriously, an early “happy birthday” to your mom, and congrats on reaching such a milestone.

Also, good luck to you on your trip!
