Large Scale Central

Drivers

Early stages so far, boiler, smokebox almost complete but before going further I need to source some, in 1.20.3 scale, 37’’ drivers. Does anyone know of any manufacturer who has this size on any of their products?. They scale out to around 45mm over the tyres. If I cannot find any suitable ready made it will be the casting/turning route for this build which if I continue with it will be RGS #74.

Happy New Year to all.

Looking on this page;

It looks like the LGB Mogul has 46mm drivers, and the Aristocraft Rodgers has 44.5mm drivers. Maybe if you troll the used market you can come up with one or two to scrap for the drivers.

Trainworld still lists the Rodgers rear drivers for sale in their parts section;

Maybe you could check with them and see if you can get those.

Just some ideas.

Hi Dave,

If you are building an electric loco, check with Phil Jensen at Hartland loco works. They have one very close to what you need, its the wheel that was used for the Mason engines. These are a plastic center and metal rim. The phone number is on their web site.

If I recall, HLW’s wheels come in 1.5", 1.75", and 2" diameters. He’s also got gears and motors for you to do a DIY power train. I was going to go that route for my EBT #7 build, until I decided it was far more worth the time/energy/money equation to have Barry’s Big Trains do a custom chassis for me. He also had suitable 36" drivers, so it worked nicely. With Barry being semi (mostly) retired now, I don’t know that he’s still got the materials on hand to do a custom chassis or even if he’s still got the wheels, but it probably wouldn’t hurt to ask.

Its a shame that no one has taken over for Barry. New drives, especially custom ones, are hard to come by.

Thanks for the advice guys, the LGB mogul route would seem to be the route to go as I think those wheels are more available here in UK than the other suggestions. A friend has offered to plasma cut the frames for me so the project is looking better by the day.

Once again your help is appreciated.

David

Plasma cut, oh my! It must be nice to have that available for you.

Plasma is neat, but there is usually a high degree of clean up after the cut. Plan on LOTS of filing/machining when you get the frames…and for critical areas I would allow additional material for machining.

Change of plans I am afraid as cannot easily get the drivers I need for this build so, having some suitable drivers and other bits and bobs I have decided to do a T19 instead.

Progress so far is that I have 1.20 drawings for one of these and from these have drawn others of the cab, the main frames and a few other bits and they are now with a friend who is converting them into a suitable programme for his plasma and laser cutters. Once these are back with me the build can proceed. The frames and frame spacers are to be in steel and at the moment the cab sides and ends in thin brass, layered to represent the window and door frames.

Will report further with pics asap.

David
