Large Scale Central

Dreyfuss & the Heavyweights

So… the Accucraft 1/29th scale NYC Dreyfuss Hudson locomotives are coming later this year (in theory.) I have one on order, but what to put behind it? All my active rolling stock is Fn3 (1:20.3 narrow gauge.)

The ideal would be a string of USA Trains smooth-side passenger coaches - but (a) that would run me $2,000 and up and (b) they are in the later blue/grey color scheme. My pal Jim assures me that Mr Ro has no interest in selling a grey version to help another manufacturer, so that could be a big paint job, if I ever get more money in the Train Fund.

But wait, there are a couple of NYC coaches up on the top shelf over my desk. I couldn’t resist the Aristo Pacific when it came out, and I added an Atlantic as pilot engine. Then the Fn3 stuff started arriving, so it got relegated to the wall display.

So maybe the NYC heavyweights are the same color scheme as the Hudson. And surprise, surprise, Star Hobby has one more coach in the same colors (in a really old grey Aristo box.) So for $175 I have a combine, coach and observation.

What possible excuse can I find for running them behind a Dreyfuss Hudson? Any ideas?

I did think of a ‘presidential candidate’ special train? Put some posters and red/white/blue bunting on the observation platform? Pretend the candidate had to have the latest and greatest loco for his train, but also needed a platform to stand on for his speeches?

I run weird train setups on my RR under the label “tourist or railfan special” On any given Sunday you can see a string of passengers cars being slowed dragged by a 2 truck shay or a climax. The railfans love it and weekends are made for steamers to strut their stuff.

Todd,

A railfan special seems like a good excuse, but I hope the railroad would sell more than 3 cars-worth of tickets.

Incidentally, you 1/29th experts - why does the Charles Ro website have a 2011/2012 sale price catalog with the aluminum coaches at $259, described as “two tone grey” yet the USA Trains website says they are $439 and, while also describing them as grey, shows photos of BLUE coaches ?

Pete, I watch Trains and Locomotives Monday nights on RTV and they have had multiple videos of excursions. The one thing they always seem to have in common is passenger cars of all types and colors. Some private (NHRA chapters etc) some lettered for different RR’s.

Just a thought.

Cause you want too? Thats my excuse most of the time…

The NYC ran just about anything they had behind loco’s so pritty much anything is game but these are nice and I have 17 USAT’s cars and 15 Heavyweights for my Dryfuss to pull.
