As a self-professed advocate of 1/22.5 scale, I am wondering if it is possible to relatively easily downscale the Connie, without altering frame dimensions (length, width, etc). I am only thinking of a generic loco with no particular prototype intended. I have no intention of going the K-27 route and am thinking of a simple cosmetic alteration, like a smaller cab. I realise that it would be a rather largish consolidation in 1/22.5 scale due the overall bulk of the drivetrain.
Someone (Rod maybe) made a credible 1:22.5 C21 from a Connie. There’s an article on the conversion around somewhere.
My dad’s in the process of just such a project. I think he’s using a 4-6-0 cab I sent him, but he may be making one himself, too. He cut the domes and stack down around 1/4", narrowed the running boards, and is building a new front pilot for it. I can’t remember what he’s doing for a tender. Either he’s using the 4-6-0 tender I sent with the cab, or he’s using a 1:24 EBT mikado tender I built years ago for an EBT mikado that never got built.
I’m after him to send me photos, but nothing’s shown up yet. He’ll be out next week to visit, and I told him he needed to bring photos of his progress if he wanted to see his granddaughter.
Later,
K
Yeah it was me Warren, it should be remembered that even a downscaling as decribed means you end up with a metre scale engine. And thanks for saying it was credible, I thought so at the time Here is a pic.
Be aware that a Connie tender is all wrong for 1.22.5 and I cut about 12mm outta the chassis centre before I made the new tender. Full story is at http://www.smegworld.org.uk/spaf/c21/c21.htm Cheers
Kevin, Rod and Warren, many thanks. Kevin, the project your father is undertaking is basically my intention. An Annie cab on the Connie running gear with a modified Annie tender. This would be a generic loco and no intended prototype. My intention is to make a loco which ‘fits in’ with my roster. While I like the Connie it does not get used as it is simply too big. I have owned it for around three years and I seriously doubt that it has been used more than two or three minutes running time. Hopefully running gear would remain standard Baker type, as apart from adding extra axles to chassis, running gear is one place I do not venture.
