Double check those switches before reversing!

The Candlewood Valley Scenic’s main line at South Willow Hill is presently out of service due to a major derailment! Preliminary investigation reveals that when heading RR South (to the right in photo) the crew ran through a spring switch set to the wrong route. That would have been fine except they reversed before clearing the switch. That resulted in locomotive M-11 traveling both routes until it derailed and then was impacted by head end power car 152.

After assessing the damages the crew decided that they would go for beans and worry about the train later!

Just to explain the consist configuration. The Head End Power car is located between the locomotives to enable the pair to traverse tight curves. When both locos are coupled together, the front and rear steps collide in tight turns. By putting the HEP car between them they can negotiate the curves with no problems.

Time to call RJ Corman!
