Large Scale Central

Does this count?

I don’t really have any modeling skills and this is a very very humble effort compared to what people here pull off. We live near the right of way of the Washington & Old Dominion RR, an always-marginal local line that ran mostly freight and some passenger, using mostly used diesels. We’re doing a lot of belt-tightening around here and so I decided to take one of two very used, beat up LGB 2061s that were given to my son many years ago and make an approximation of W&OD #56

So I repainted the LGB diesel and added some decorations and some weathering

Odd thing is I think it looks MORE European now than it did before

Mike,

Adding a platform to both ends would fix the Euro Look

And remove the “rain shield” over the cab windows.

Regards, Greg

Of course it counts!

If “you” did it, it counts!

Good work!

The prototype pic is neat too, I like that heavily weathered look.

some excellent suggestions. I could probably manage cutting the shades off the windows…

It’s funny–when I started this I thought “I’ll just make it look roughly like the W&OD, so older folks in the neighborhood who remember when the W&OD ran will smile when they see it.” But now all I see is inaccuracies and problems!

A friend of mine calls this the “the midas touch of expertise.”

Couldn’t sleep last night, started thinking–buy an aristo center cab diesel, cut it up and maybe you could make a pretty convincing GE 70 tonner…

See what happens, Mike?
The first step is the biggest one!
After that, it’s all phun!

The question should be, how well do you like it? Does it meet or exceed your artistic/historical/mechanical vission? Any effort to take an off the shelf product and personalize it to meet your needs/vision counts in my book. Most people are content to just buy it and run it. Too few of us take that first big step. Welcome to the few, the proud, the Large Scale Bashers and Modelers. Otherwise know as the LSBM corp

Hey, don’t get riled at me! YOU wrote that you thought it looked more yoorpiun, so all I wrote was to note the bits, that IMO, needed changing to make it look more American.

I’ve taken my thread out just in case it has inadvertently caused you any lasting mental anguish, OK?

Hey Terry, what’s next? You gonna dispense Valium or something? :stuck_out_tongue:

Huh? You didn’t cause me any mental anguish at all–I’m confused. But not even slightly riled or anguished. Thanks for something, I think, not sure…

My sentiments exactly! I think everyone should be encouraged to personalize their locos and rolling stock in some way, whether it's with a bit of weathering, or a full-blown rebuild into something completely different.
