I had the same problem ( the roof was a pig to try to remove). I abandoned the idea…I even asked Hartland about it…got a reply but still could not shift things, which I believe are due to the plastic lugs not ‘giving’ enough when pressed out for release (and I hate breaking things!)
I might have another go…one day.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-frown.gif)
On the Delton version, to remove the roof, I had to pull 2 little metal pins out of center of the letter board. The Heartland version looks to have those same pins.

Yes… I did that and still found it impossible to remove the roof as the plastic lugs would not “give”. It really is fitted well…too well!
I WILL give it another go one day.
Similar to what David said, there are two little brass brads on the sides of the roof that just pull out. Doing so allows the roof to be pulled off and appears to provide all of the access necessary. I don’t think that I will need to separate the frame and body to accomplish my objectives.
Thanks to all.
Just to complete this thread, I completed the install of a G Scale Graphics RailBoss 4 after lunch. It is “chugging” around the layout as I write this. Easy-peasy! Now to find a reasonable looking red LED tail light to complete it.

How about a video so we can see and hear it?

I do not live the “i-Life” and eschew most of the popular devices such as smart phones and social media. I’m not quite a Luddite, but close to it for the aforementioned items. I don’t have a video capable camera though it’s at least digital.
Anyway, there is not much to see from a still picture of the Railbus as it would look just similar to a catalog picture. It does not have a sound card and I didn’t mean to imply that it did with my “chugging” verb in quotes. Maybe I should have use “tooling”, or the lesser colorful “running”, around instead.
Yeah, I know, it didn’t happen if there are no pictures!
