Disassembling a Bachmann Porter

Anyone have a clue how to get one of these apart?

I’ve had one on the bench for almost an hour trying to get it down to where I can install batteries & R/C. Lots of parts are off, but I can’t figure out how to detach the cab & tanks from the chassis to accces the cavities and wiring.

Saddle Tank or Side Tank…all else fails call Dave!

I’ve done a Saddle, nothing really to miss if I remember…never a side tank?

Jon,
Do you have these diagrams? It’s a PDF: http://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/dwg/dwgs/G825X.pdf

I’m not sure that they go far enough for what you’re trying to do…

Got it. I didn’t bring the exploded view with me, but found it here http://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/dwg/dwgs/G825X.pdf

Thanks Bruce - I had the same thought at the same time. And it showed me exactly what I was missing. Simple when you know the trick.

When you re-assemble it , try colour coding the screws with nail varnish (we won’t tell).
Or the hole surrounding the screw head , which is better , but not always appropriate .

Good idea Mike. And even though my dis-assembly post is almost two months old, it’s still apart trying to figure out how to cram batteries & R/C gear into the boiler/tanks.

Only two months , Jon ?
You haven’t given enough time to think it through .
Nah , I know the feeling-------it once got as bad as "What the heck’s this ? Where did this come from ?
Looks interesting "

That happens to me…on the same day…

I once tore apart and rebuilt the engine of my MGA. I remember putting two rather large bolts “right there,” so they would be “there” when I needed them. They were still “there” when I have the engine reassembled and running. I still don’t remember from whence they came.

I once left a "C ring" out of a rebuild of a transmission and month later my Dad had to replace the rear end in the same car. As I remember, he took it pretty good and just chocked it up to a learning experience.

Ahhh life.

The only problem, that was in 1977, and the bolts are still “there.” I didn’t learn a thing!
