Digital Camera Purchase-ideas

So I’m looking to purchase a new Kodak Digital Camera…Kodak because I have the easy share printing dock from my wifes camera from a few years back…

There are a few models I am looking at…all close to the same price at local retailer…

Z1285…12 MP with only 5X Zoom $199
http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=9/11920/131/12442&pq-locale=en_US

Z712…7.1 MP with 12X Zoom and Quick Shutter click-to-capture speed (0.26 sec.) $199
http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=9/11920/131/10689&pq-locale=en_US

and
V1003…10.1MP and only $129…

So I really like the quick shutter, but the smaller chassis would be nice, I think, although the larger camera could be hung around neck for easier access…Is it worth losing a quick shutter for action shots (kids, Ralfan, Sports, etc…) for the 12MP and whimpy zoom? At Tweetsie this year on the run-bys, I could only get one shot off before it was passed, that really bugged me…My Dad’s SLR Nikon is 6.1MP and it’s photos are remarkable compared to our current 4.0…I’m not a photographer, so any opnions are appreciated!

Thanks…gonna buy something before the end of week!

Hi Cale -

While I have to admit that I’m not a Kodak fan, primarily because of their software, it seems that you have made the brand decision and I won’t try to change it. Might I suggest that you compare these three cameras at Digital Photography Review http://www.dpreview.com ?

Unless you want to make huge enlargements, 12 MP is kind of overkill. Anything above 5MP will give you great results for web sized images and good enlargements up to 8x10. With that in mind the 7.1 with the quick shutter would be my choice of the three.

If you can spend just a bit more, are not married to Kodak, and can handle a larger SLR-Like camera, check out Fujifilm 7.1 MP S5700 Zoom and it’s
family members. I had the 3.1 MP version and loved it. My son has a 5.1 MP version and has been happy as well.

I just last week upgraded to an entry level digital SLR - but that’s way above your price.

Before you buy, shop price. www.Pricegrabber.com is good.

Good luck !

Jon

I bought the Fuji S8000 fd a few months ago…very happy with it although I’m still getting used to it.

If your choices have been out more than a year, I’d check for used on evilBay…I got a nice Olympus C4000 zoom (OK, it’s only 4megapixel, but perfect for what I wanted it to do) for $40… when it came out a few years ago they were $500

Thanks for all the Suggestions!

Just ordered me a Fujifilm S700…$179.95…seemed to fit the bill pretty well, unfortunately Local Circuit City was outta stock, shipping should place it here in a few days (First of Next Week). Brother in Law has the S5000, older model of the S700 and he loves it. Considered the S8000, but for the bux-had to pass! Another baby coming in July!

Nice camera for the price. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. The price you got is pretty good. Hope your not paying tax and shipping too.

If my new SLR did movies, I’d sell the S602Z, but I’ll keep it for movies and work pictures.

Enjoy!

a little tax…i think $12.85, $5 shipping washed (was free for slow del, but sprung for 3 day ship)with discount on New Camera Bag…cale

This am, I was feeding kids the most important meal of the day…door bell rings and I glance out the see the Fed-Ex truck leaving…I sat there puzzled, wondering what in the world Carla ordered this time…maybe 3 min. passes and I bolt to the door…Eli yells “Whats wrong Daddy?”…“Nothing Son…That’s my New Camera!”…DUH! I am a goober!

anyways It’s here, and new smelling. It has a huge little manual, that will have to wait. I have to read the new John Eldridge book before I interview him on Tues (pre-release book arrived late yesterday)…I’ll get to it soon enough.

It also included some photo software that I am anxious to use!

Happy Easter Everyone!

Enjoy!!

Here is a shot from New Camera from Yesterday…we had a breeze now and then…I really like the software included (so far) it allows for easy resize (a problem I have suffered thru with the Kodak) Eli and Kite

I find my Fuji very easy to use as compared to the Canon A300 I have that bit the dust. Then again I use Paintshop Pro to do any editing on my pix.

Nice pix, Cale, looks like you have your hands full with that group…

Thanks, things are busy for sure! I can only imagine how it will be when #4 gets here in July (another boy!)

Cale, are you trying to fill out your own baseball team?

I have 8. The last 6 were girls. This is why I have no money for Battery power!
5 are now adults, so I am down to 3 children at home.

and people call me crazy!

Cale,

Crazy is a relative term.  And sometimes it applies to relatives.

BTW Nice camera.

On the “camera” front, just returned from the store. I “needed” a handy camera which will be tagging along wherever and whenever I go. The Canon Digital Rebel is a bit bulky for that purpose.
Some time ago I bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1 for my equal half, the logical follow-up to that was getting a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5S for a handy cam.
It is quite amazing how quickly the features expand and the relative price shrinks! And just how much they can cram into an unbelieveably small foot print!

I’ll be reading the manual for the rest of the evening (no kidding!) and by the time the battery is charged I should be familiar with the differences to the TZ1. Or at least that’s the plan!

PS, one more wrinkle. I tried to buy a Lumix (not the TZ5) from amazon.com; would you believe they don’t ship cameras to TGWN? And of course amazon.ca doesn’t carry cameras. GRRRRRRRR
