Large Scale Central

Dick's Mik Chalelnge 2014

Been busy with outside RR work as it’s been unseasonably warm and dry in Sacramento. I was updating my Christmas RR and a battery car, but I have a floor plan AND the corners of my building – an art deco style new and magazine stand.

I thought it was so original, 'til I saw the fireworks stand. Looks a lot like what mine will be, but I hope mine will be more substantial. The corners are quarter round wood, but I think it will be mostly plastic. Photos will follow, I promise.

Pictures! Pictures! pictures!

Does this mean I can’t get my “Napkin Builder” badge? I feel so … dirty because I didn’t scribble the plan on an old napkin. Will I have to transcribe my computer generated floor plan onto one?http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/dick44/2014build/Newsstand.jpeg

Here is a picture of the finished newsstand. http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/dick44/2014build/Smith&Sons.jpg

Since I can’s see the sides or back, I’m doing my “best guess” at what the rest of it looks like.

I found some quarter round molding for the curved front, and I want to put folding doors (folded) across the front so you can see inside. The door will go on one of the short ends (the left as you’re looking at the front, with an office and a window looking out the front. There will be a counter inside.

Thanks, John, for putting the pix on in the thread. I know it’s simple, but not as simple as I am.

The stand shown looks like the book cases are maybe hinged to fold inward when the place is closed. Mine will have a set of folding doors across the opening. They’ll be drawn back, so you can see inside.

More to come, when I get some time! (I’m into day two of my northwestern extension, and I picked up a battery pack for my track cleaning m/w train.)

Nothing like having too many irons in the fire.

I bet there’ll be a door in it.

If there’s no door, there’s no contest!

I’m putting the door on the left side (as you face the newsstand, and putting in a window in the front, creating an office in the left 36 square feet. The rest will be an open area with a counter along the back and right side and magazine racks along the walls.

The wall between the office and the store area will have a counter for sales.

Since I found a large piece of 1/8 inch masonite, I’ll build it mostly out of that. Here are some of the pieces cut out. A scale 10 foot piece (floor and sidewalk), a scale 8 foot piece (walls) and some 6 by 8 foot scale pieces (interior walls).

John,

Many times I have bought magazines and newspapers from stands just like that when I traveled around whilst in the RAF. There are still stands on stations here as far as I know but I have rarely travel by train since the 1960’s. Even so the UK has the fastest growing passenger railroads in the world the news said today.

Small setback. The window I was going to use is way too big. I had to build a new window from scratch. It’ll do, but I’ve lost another day, and today I was at a Boy Scout “University” do showing the club’s small modules.

Tomorrow will be warm and dry, so I’ll probably be cleaning up the garden railway. I’ll try to get pics of the various parts of the newsstand tomorrow.

Finally, after 52 dry days, it started raining in Sacramento this afternoon. So glad I got the backyard cleaned up. Did it all by myself, except for three other club members! Track is all cleaned off, trees are trimmed, weeds pulled, and groundcovers trimmed back.

I had time to ballast a couple of sections of the track, and restore my pond.

With rain forcast for tomorrow, I’ll retreat to my workshop, and get a little farther on the build. I’ve got the four walls done, the foundation cut, and built a window. Will have to do wall painting. Maybe I’ll get the interior walls painted and installed as well.

Next item is to put some LED lights inside.

Last item, which I haven’t figured out, is how to build a roof with skylights. I’m leaning toward using an acrylic roof, gluing small 2 foot acrylic squares for skylights. When done, I’ll paint the roof.

Here’s how far I’ve gotten. Not completed, by any means, but most of the pieces are here.

There’s the mandatory door:mandatory door

This should look great on the main street plaza.
