Ooooh, I love basalt. So much so that I have a bunch of pics from a trip to Iceland. I posted them in a separate topic (link) to avoid hijacking this thread. So far your basalt looks great. Not sure I’ve ever seen anybody try to model it. Nicely done!

added some red weathering chalk and some yellow and green ground foam to give it some lichen.
With a few castings I am getting a wall
Nice pic Jim. Kinda the look I was headed for.
So here is the latest mock up. I removed the wire and now it can sit where it roughly will go. I have the grey painted on and all the weathering chalk on the building. The tank will not sit on the deck it will be raised on a rack. Need to paint it red and then distress it.
wow you are zooming thru this challenge! I should try to keep up.
Looking good Devon !
I’m seeing it…it’s taking shape. If you can integrate those good-looking rocks, this will come together very very nicely. Fine paint job starting up on the rocks, although the lichen is a little overdone, as in a tad too much lichen, I think.
I may or may not agree with you about the amount of lichen. I was kinda thinking the same thing. I might try shaving it down
Remember, Devon, this is supposed to be a CHALLENGE. You sure are making it look easy! The basalt looks great. I like the weathering techniques you used on the test panel. Looks like wood from an old red barn.
Well if that’s what it looks like then it’s a success
Lichen; grind up your foam to smaller bits that you can paint on to the irregular surface for color and only a little texture.
Fully living up to my expectations Devon.
Some update shots. Work started on the landscaping base so I can mount the winch House. Removed the wire and added foam and then added the basalt columns.
And the work on the winch house is further getting weathered. I paint a grey first.
Then weathering chalks (hard to see)
Then red paint and then when dry scrap off the red to reveal the grey underneath.
I need to add foam to the upper level and then using the cast pier blocks mount the platform. I have to zip texture still also.
Your weathering is looking goooood, Devon!

Thanks Jim. It is something I have never been happy with in the past. In any scale. So I made it a point to learn to do it better for this challenge. And I am very happy with the results. It is looking just exactly like I think it should.
Looking very good Devon, going to be an interesting follow,
Dennis
I like that beat up red… for new it is looking pretty old.
Looking really good Devon. It’s really cool when the challenge forces you to learn new stuff. I love the weathering!
This is as far as I am going to get this weekend. I am tired so this is were we are.
I worked on weathering the tank. I painted it with red oxide primer and the sprayed it down with water and applied salt. After it dried I rubbed off the salt leaving it only in the places I wanted rust. Then painted it flat black. When that dried I washed the salt off exposing the rust underneath.
I also zip textured the lower section and installed the pier blocks. I then put foam on the upper section giving the basic layout of the mine area. The idea is to have a mountain with trees that acts as a visual barrier between this section and the section on the other side.
I am done for the weekend. Next up on the list is to continue with the basalt. The next set of three columns are drying. I have to attach the building to the decking. Build the tank rack and put the guard railing up. Put the roof on.
Devon, you did a great job on the “old red barn” weathering. It looks very realistic. I like the salt idea on the tank, too. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard of that technique but I’ll be a filing it away for future use. The project is coming along quite nicely.
Dan the salt is an oldie but goodie. I used it in my model car days.
