SWEET!!!
When will the block be done?

I’ve finished assembling the shop windows and door:

Wow. Very, very sharp. I’d like to have your stock of styrene!
What type of shop is it going to be? Will it have an interior?
Yes, it’ll definitely have an interior. I haven’t decided yet what kind of shop though… I’m thinking maybe a candy shop, or a bakery, or maybe a dress shop. Something visually interesting but not too much of a pain to model.
More progress… most of the exterior walls don’t need detailing as they will be hidden, so they went together pretty quickly.

I still have to detail the front of this small extension on the side. The door there will not have a window, so I’m just going to build the door right on the wall, and then build up siding around it.

Here’s a test fitting to see how the building will look alongside the others:

I chiseled out some of the rocks on the cliff, to make room for the rear extension of the second story.:
Ray, the building is coming along great…
That’s some fine modeling, Ray…

I sit in awe of your modeling skills, Ray.
So sharp!
What are you using for the walls?
Do you have a favorite glue? I’ve just started using Tamiya extra thin cement and I really like it for gluing styrene. It comes with a nice tiny brush - much better than the gigundo ones that come with Ambroid, Micromark, Testors, or Plastruct. It seems to hold just as well, and I use a lot less of it.
Did I miss the plan for the bottom piece of each wall? Is that where the stone goes? Real stone? Or styrene?
That is coming out nice. I love how you paint your buildings. The colors really go well with the scenary.

What are you using for the walls?
Quote:I'll have to give that a try. I've been using Plastruct's "Plastic Weld". It's ok, but the applicator brush tends to slop too much cement onto the surface where it tends to melt some of the fine "wood grain" detail.

Quote:There's a 3/8" high section at the bottom of the walls which will be hidden by the "wood" sidewalk on the outside. On the inside, it'll be hidden by the floor. So it's essentially just a base. I'll glue some styrene strips to the concrete foundation, which will fit into the base of the building to hold it in position.

I thought about making it a hardware store but it’s such a small structure, some kind of specialty shop seemed more appropriate.
BTW, I plan to incorporate the names of our children and grandchildren into the layout, including the business names. For instance, the rock shop will be “Sam’s Rock Shop”, after our grandson. I just haven’t made the sign for it yet. I’m waiting until I can get several signs printed out together.

OK…sounds like a great plan!!
I would love too have see “Clarkes Dress Shop and Hosiery” !
Proprietor Andy Clarke
I just realized something…Ralph has six daughters …so in possibly 10 years he could be modeling a city block with your plan Ray!
Good thing he’s doing passenger cars which is gonna be one neat looking consist when finished!

Another update… I built the overhang that extends out over the sidewalk, and started on the roof for that portion of the building:

That part of the roof is designed to lift off for access into the interior:

I also made the door at the side of the building, and added the siding. The door turned out a bit rough but it’s supposed to be old and weathered so I think it’ll be alright:
I put in thick strips around the interior at the base, to support the floor; and near the top to support the ceiling:

Pretty soon I’ll be ready to start on the second floor.
That looks really good Ray!
Nice.
I can’t wait until you start building locomotives like Bruce
Ralph
I’m working on the second floor of the building now. I decided to make working windows, mainly just to see if I could do it. It turned out to be pretty easy. Here’s one window, unpainted and without glass. I’ll add the glass after it’s painted:

'Way cool, Ray. Do those sashes run in a channel?
