Interesting thoughts and insight on the fall of the steam locomotive industry.
Folks;
Sometimes you will see prints or engravings of 1830s era steam locomotives pulling a flat car loaded with cotton bales directly coupled to the tender. Boiler explosions were the reason for the cotton bales. It was hoped (in that day) that the cotton bales would prevent any shrapnel from flying back into the coaches!

P.S. When I started learning to fire and run the locomotive on the Dry Gulch Railroad at Hershey Park, my boss admonished me, “You will only ever make one mistake with a steam engine. It will be the last mistake you make in your life!” Really put “The Fear of God” in me to pay attention to what I learned and apply due diligence to operating the locomotive.
